oh perky, I had the same radiation. Call your rad dr. and ask him to prescribe you something for your throat. It's been two years and I can't remember the name of it, but it was a liquid that you took before you ate. It coated my throat in kind of a numbing way and that helped the food go down. My throats pain was really bad for about a week. Good luck.

I can't even imagine how awful it must be throwing up when you have a sore throat or esophagus from radiation. I'm so sorry! The medication my radiation oncologist gave me was called Magic Mouthwash. It contains benadryl among other things. I didn't like the taste of the Magic Mouthwash and it had lots of preservatives, etc. in it, so I didn't use it much. Some people swear by it! I bought some aloe vera juice at the health food store. That may have helped a little. I was able to drink small frequent sips of water and soup. I was told to avoid anything spicy or scratchy (chips, nuts, etc). My esophagus felt much better after a week or so. I hope this very unpleasant side effect will be over for you soon!

Oh yes, this happened to me too. I also didn't care for the magic mouthwash, but I used it when desperate to eat something. I also ate a lot of bland foods...oatmeal, peanut butter toast, milkshakes. The good news is it shouldn't last too long, but you should keep your doctor updated.

Also, make sure to take something for acid reflex, because that will make it much worse. I took over the counter Omeprozole.

I now remember Carafate is the prescription medication I took for my radiation induced esophagitis. It's not magic mouthwash

Yes, acid reflux is the pits and bland is good. I would also try to eat at least three hours before bedtime and nothing more after. Also no exercise right after eating.

Thank you everybody! Yes, a bit over a week and I do feel much better. The magic mouthwash helped a little but i did loose 15 lbs! Hope I keep some of it off! :) I did read somewhere that if you eat 4 teaspoons of honey before and after the radiation, throat pain is much less. Will try that if I ever have to do that again!
