Mastectomy Question/Bandages
Thanks, everyone, for such support during this time! BC.org has been a lifesaver.
I have a general/somewhat simple question as I try to prepare for surgery at the end of Feb. I know this varies by doctor -- but for a BMX are you typically bandaged and told not to change the bandage before the first pre-op? Or do we have to change it? Are there multiple bandages? One big one and smaller over incisions? I'm to have nipple-sparing with small incisions in breast fold and around nipple, I think. Plus, lymph incisions. Just trying to figure out what I'll end up with. I guess this perhaps varies so much by dr/hospital.
Do they provide supplies if we have to change (although I am stockpiling some items already).

Hello. For me, I did not change bandages. Dr took off the gauze-type bandage and I was left with the skin-clear bandage that slowly rubbed off in the shower after that. Before that I couldn't get the area wet or do anything with the bandage, I was too scared anyway! The lymph incision was small but it was also covered up. I was given a bunch of alcohol wipes for the drains so I didn't need to buy anything on my own. (Keep in mind I had a mastectomy). I hope this helps! Good luck!

I think it varies a lot with different surgeons. I had nipple sparing BMX. After surgery there was just a bunch of gauze padding stuffed in my surgical bra. The incisions had steri strips. After 48 hrs. I was allowed to remove the bra and padding to shower. The only dressings that stayed on until follow up appt were the clear tegaderm dressings over the drain sites.
Each time after my shower I would apply new gauze padding and change my bra. The hospital provided me a spare bra and did give me extra gauze pads and what is called Abdominal pads- they are 5x9 inches and very soft and absorbent and provide nice padding inside the bra.
Good luck to you

I wasn't sent home with supplies and suggest you ask your doctor what you'll need. We bought nitrile gloves, alcohol wipes, disposable measuring cups, and a variety of bandages.
Do you have some Comfy pajamas that that open in the front? I needed them and a recovery camisole with drain pockets most!

Thanks for the replies, everyone.
I'm taking supplies because I'm doing surgery away from home -- and this provides some level of control. AND, I have a 9-year-old son who needs bandages for various injuries all the time. So they'll get used likely somehow. But it helps to know what others have encountered.
I appreciate it.
I purchased a camisole from local BS products store (insurance should cover but have to wait until after surgery to submit) with drain pockets. And got a few tanks with shelf bra larger than my normal size for comfort. Another tank type sports bra (again, a little larger) with zip front. Worse case, I don't use these things or have more than I need. Also, have zip hoodies and larger T-shirts ready to go. I'm very petite so not used to wearing larger clothing. I'm trying to be cognizant of not using arms, etc., and just making it easy. I'm going with sweatpants that are not too snug -- I don't really wear PJs -- but hoping I can get those on. May ask for help! I'm still debating UMX or BMX. (ugh)
