Starting Rads in January 2017

I was never even offered the prone position where I go. Today I take my sorry, burnt, split boob in and see if the will start the boosts back up.
I just want to feel better we are trying to give my DH a surprise 60th birthday dinner and I have zero energy!
-
When will you be evaluated again to see when you can proceed, Caligirl?
KB870, I'm in a similar situation with an F/G affected breast. I had a very preliminary consultation with a very nice RO before starting chemo, but didn't know to ask about prone positioning. I ran into his nurse later when in the building to see my BS. She said he typically doesn't do prone. After a 100 pound weight loss, pancake is a good description. I can't imagine how much of my chest / lungs / heart (yup, left-side cancer) would be irradiated with my giant bosom spread out so that may be a deal breaker for me. He was receptive to the shorter Canadian protocol so that is in his favor.

By "prone", do you guys mean on your back? Cause that's how they put me and I have C cup boobs (tho the one that had the lumpectomy is now more like B😆). I didn't even know they did it other ways until you all mentioned it! There was no discussion
-
When talking about breast radiation, prone means lying on your stomach.

KB870, UGH! I do NOT do well with doctors who get their shorts (or panties) in a bunch of I ask questions. This study suggests that the "hot spots" that excluded women with larger breasts from the shorter protocol might be addressed through prone positioning. (Link didn't work... Let me try again.)
http://www.cancernetwork.com/breast-cancer/hypofra...
Looking at photos of women in position for radiation, whether prone or supine, has me very concerned because my encapsulated shoulder simply does not allow my arm to go where it needs to go for this stuff. I thought this image was good at showing how prone position may help our large, "pancakey" breasts to get radiated while minimizing lung exposure if they're spread across our chests. ARRRGH! I can't get the darned drect link to the image to work, but a Google search for "prone position breast radiation images" should lead you to photos of the comparative radiation paths.

hello to all,
Caligirl55 - I hope you feel better soon!
I had my last radiation yesterday. My MD told me today that my arm pit skin didn't split, that it had several blisters that broke open. My arm pit is better today but the area where they put the tape, for the bandages under my arm, is causing me a lot of pain. And even though they said they used the mildest tape when they took it off it took off the very top layer of my skin came off too. The rest of my chest looks like a hot iron was put on it. I'm using the biafine cream.
Im sorry for you larger breasted ladies. I can understand why you'd want the prone position. That must be frustrating. Especially when it makes so much sense to use that.
I'm happy to be done. Also I'm emotionally and physically exhausted. I've heard many times that bc treatment is awful but doable. I have to agree.
Hang in there andHave a nice evening.
-
SuMarie - Congrats!! So happy for you, I hope you recover quickly from all your treatments!
I finished 13 of 30 today. Starting to go from pink to red in some areas. Hopefully it will calm down this weekend. Some days I feel great, others I'm so exhausted I don't want to breath. Has anyone else experienced this roller coaster?
Thanks for sharing your journey.
-
VLH....went in today they did the boost so 1 of 5 of those down! They gave me some Percocet for the pain. I can't wait for this all to heal. I dread work tomorrow when I have to put on a bra and a couple tops.
SuMarie...yay you are done. So happy for you to finally heal from this.
JShannon...yes some days I'm so exhausted...it's like my emotions up and down!
-
I finished my last radiation on Wednesday I had 15 and 5 boosts, I. Delighted to be finished and will hopefully return to normal soon.
Jshannon I know what you mean I found radiation an emotional rollercoaster, I had good days and very bad days I spent the weekends crying and some evenings I felt like I was down a dark hole, I really found rads very tough going my skin was perfect though bit pink slight few spots in it but not sore or itchy.
Well done summarie for finishing
Caligirl hope you can continue as soon as Possible -
Found out this week that I will have 28 treatments instead of 30. I feel like I won the lottery to have those two removed from my total. It's the little things. LOL! I will have 13/28 today. Ironic that I am having #13 on a Friday. I have to find the humor in this somewhere! So far, so good. Skin has a few, very mild color changes, and occasionally I get achy at the previous site of my primary tumor. RO said that is typical and not to worry. Can't believe I will be half way through this on Monday. Time flies. Hang in there everyone! Have a great weekend!
-
I'm glad you could get your boost, Caligirl. Did you get the soft cotton sports bras after surgery? Wearing two of those (I think mine are inexpensive Fruit of the Loom) gives decent support, but still more comfortable for me than a regular bra.

SUMARIE & LORRIE --- CONGRATULATIONS !!!!!
Cali -- Glad you are back on track to get it finished. I hope the pain is manageable for you. At least when done, you can really start to heal with no more treatments hanging over your head.
KKs -- Every little bit helps... In your pocket for the rest of your treatment.
KB870 -- Good luck finding a new RO.. You could ask your BS or MO for recommendations.
-
Lorri...Yay ....so happy for you! This has been more emotional than I ever expected.
KKsMom....that's great 2 less is a winner in my eyes ... I would love to be done with this chapter.
VLH...I have some sports bras ...I bought a few but nothing feels as good but a tank top around the house. I am to large chested to flop around at work or at functions like a memorial today. I don't want to scare anyone!
Elizabeth...thank you ...I can't wait to be done ...soon!!
Couldn't have done this without you all ..hugs

Caligirl, I hope you're feeling better soon and can get this over.
My last rad was Wednesday but my skin has been getting worse, more red & burnt looking, more tender. The blisters that broke under my arm are healing very slowly. Whoever said it's not over when your rads are done was right. Sorry, I don't want to be discouraging, I'm just thinking some of you might want to be prepared.
Warm thoughts for all of you!
-
Hi yes I was one of those who warned that rads being done is not exactly the end of issues. The underarm area is just way more sensitive I think- the skin is different and is subject to more movement and friction. But I am now 2.5 weeks from my last boost and things are healing pretty nicely. The tannish/brown skin is working its way off. It is only left on the boost stripe. It doesn't peel it just gets replaced-hard to explain. My nipple is still swollen and sensitive but it was somewhat like that before radiation from the surgery/biopsies. Still using the lubriderm and aloe. I am feeling much more like my old self. My mood is brighter and I am catching up on neglected things. Energy is definitely better.
Caligirl we are all cheering for you to get past those last boosts.

Congrats SuMarie and Lorri!!! Lorri you are the poster child for less is more. Amazing that you did not use any lotions and mostly missed out on the skin se's.
JShannon yes fatigue came and went in waves- first week of rads and the week after finishing were worst for me. I exercised 30 min every day even when I ab-so-lut-ley did not feel like it- I think that helped.
Keep drinking that water...staying hydrated really helps.
-
Ladies, my MO said that the SE's from Rads get worse for at least 2 weeks after you are finished. I have a dark complexion to start with so my boob looks like I spent 3 weeks in the sun and my nipple has darkened very much... I am still slathering on the cream at least once a day. I was very lucky not to have had any skin problems I hope things will be better for all of you that are having problems.
-
Congrats to those who have finished and thanks for keeping us in the loop on your recovery! You and those still in process are in my prayers for healing and peac! ✨🙏🏻✨
-
Hallo group,
I started my radiation on January 18th and have 13 times left of my 25. Everything has gone well but now starting to feel very sore around the scar. The skin is getting very tight. I am also noticing some lumps in the scar itself. I will ask about them tomorrow morning at my session but one lump under my arm scares me. It might just be some swelling.
-
3 treatments left!!!!!
-
yay Kattis .. moving right along .. has to be a good feeling. I hope your soreness does clear and that the lumpiness is nothing to worry about. I have not yet started the radiation but will go in for the simulation tomorrow. Good luck going forward.
ArtyMom , yay almost there.. the finish line has got to be awesome when its so close! Congrats!
💗💪🏻
-
Kattis...my skin got very tight and then split so keep moisturizer on and ask about those lumps.
Tomorrow is my last rad of 33 ...after last week being postponed because of my split underarm I am so so thankful to almost finish this chapter.
-
trying to look past my final session on Friday. I know that radiated breasts sometimes have a different texture and can even shrink a bit. Anyone have any idea how long the final shape/size to appear? I'm going to need new bras eventually
-
Cali -- Did you finish??
-
ArtyMom, my plastic surgeon is going to trim my natural side to match my lumpectomy + lift side six months after the end of radiation. That is how long it takes for the breast to settle into its final size. Sometimes it can take longer, he said, but he will know that in a month or two when he feels me up next :P (If it feels "woody" then, it could be a year. I think that is how he described it. Super firm.)
I gather half a cup size or less is a typical amount of volume to lose due to rads.
-
woo hoo...finally done!! I don't have to return for 3 weeks to C-care for 3 weeks...I may not know what to do
-
Caligirl55 Congratulations! You must feel relieved to finally be done with rads. So very happy for you!
I finish friday yahoo! Finish chemo monday double yahoo! I then get 5 weeks off. Get petscan on march 14 and mri on march 16 then as long as petscan is clear i have surgery march 20. Really scared but trying to stay positive!
SuMarie congratulations on finishing rads i also know you too are relieved and glad to be done!
To all the newbies welcome and so sorry you are here. You will get alot of support here.
-
Congrats Caligirl55 and DiV on finishing and almost being done! 23 more for me......
-
Congrats CaliGirl, Arty, and DiV!!! You've won the rad race! Today will be #11 for me with 22 to go. So far so good, although I have noticed the fatigue creeping up on me. But, it's almost the weekend! I see lots of lotion and naps in my future.
I've been doing some exercises recommended by my drs that help with tightness - lay on your bed with your head near the edge, grip a long dowel rod with two hands, and keeping your arms straight, bring itfrom your lap to over your head. I do this 10 reps x 3/day.
-
CONGRATULATIONS CALI !!!
-
I am looking forward for the radiation to be over...feeling exhausted mostly..Thank you for your replies. I asked about my lump and it was a large pimple (bolder) ..:) Who knew! It just shows how scary this is and I can not shake the thought of it resurfacing.
Hoping things will get better with time. Well, hoping.
