HELP Low Platelets count
Ladies
Once again Im reaching out to you all. Had second rounds of blood test after my first chemo on 1-16-17 so exactly 2 weeks since chemo. I was told by the nurse that my Platelets count was low. It was at 97 which Im thinking is 97000 and normal should be between 142.000 and 424.000. The nurse was very blunt and said you have to watch for bleeding and if numbers don't come up your treatment will be delayed, you will have to be given platelets before treatment can resume, . Dr was not available today , so Yea she scared the crap out of me.
Have any of you had to deal with this while on chemo, is this normal . I can not find any information on normal or dangerous levels. If there is anything I can do to help get these levels up. Would low Platelets have anything to do with the Neulasta shot I had .
Thanks for any help you can give me

I just had my 2nd treatment in a row cancelled due to low platelet count. Mine was 74 last week and 62 this week. They won't do chemo at Mayo if it's under 100. They have not said a word about giving me platelets but said they wanted to see them come up on their own. I asked today if there was anything I could do and she said no. I have heard of a bone soup that I may try. If you look though the October 2016 chemo group, I think you'll find it.
Since I had my last Neulasta the end of Nov., I know mine isn't due to that. One of the chemos I am currently receiving is carboplatin and they say this is what is responsible.

HoneyBeaw - If you can, please post your details in the My Profile section.
I don't know what chemo you're doing, but I did have low platelets with AC(adriamycin/Cytoxan). It was before a Thanksgiving holiday and there was NO way I was going to the hospital for a transfusion that weekend when every medical person with any experience was off. By the next week, the platelets had increased. With TCHP. (taxotere, carboplatin, herceptin & perjeta), I only had low WBC.

Hi Connie
What do they say about missing treatment ,Will it mess you up or do they just add treatment on at the end .
I'm on TC every 21 day cycle
-
Im on Docetaxal and Cytoxan (TC) every 3 weeks .

Platelets are the shortest lived blood cells in the body - they have about a five day life span, and are affected by chemotherapeutic agents. Your count can differ, actually quite a bit, from day to day. There is not much you can eat or do to increase them, except to wait - that is why chemo is delayed until the counts improve, or you can also be given a platelet transfusion to increase your level enough to handle your regularly scheduled chemo. If your levels come up to a safe point you can have a delayed chemo - I have seen people just have a longer interval between infusions if your MO decides not to transfuse. If you do need a platelet transfusion it is a pretty easy process, takes about 20 minutes after a determination of your blood type. If you receive platelets you need to be sure they are single donor, not pooled - and preferably irradiated and in your blood type, although type is not as critical since the units contain no red cells. If you have an impact on your platelet count with the first round of chemo, chances are good that this will be a problem throughout the time you will be receiving chemo. Platelets are the clotting factor in your blood, and chemo can irritate everything on the inside of the body so it is important to safeguard and monitor closely, in addition to being aware of cuts and bruising on the outside of the body.

They just add it at the end. They assure me that it will be ok. I just want it to all be over and done with. She never mentioned a transfusion but you can bet I'm going to be more assertive if it hasn't improved enough by next week. We specifically asked if anything could be done and she said no.

connie - platelet transfusions are routinely done, and will boost your platelets for a short period - the newly transfused platelets only last for that same 5 day period at most, so it is possible that some oncs just don't think it is worth the effort since is will not be a sustained improvement. I worked here in Tampa for the same company that supplies transfusion services to Mayo in FL, and we transfused cancer patients with platelets all the time, probably daily. I have also seen my own MO order platelet transfusions for patients so they could continue their chemo with a just enough of a delay to bring their count up. Definitely ask about it when you see your MO next, as it might be enough to tide you over so you can stay mostly on track. Good luck!

After first round TCHP, I ended up with acute ITP (very low platelets, 2 in my case) that wouldn't come up with platelet infusions (3x). Landed in hospital for five days and two IG infusions. The two oncologists ( one is also a hematologist)gave me a month off and then switched me to AC for now. After that's done,,they're going to try Herceptin alone to see if that was the culprit. Because I need the Herceptin. In the meantime, lots of blood labs to watch platelet count. It was scary for awhile. If your nose starts bleeding and won't stop, go to the ER. But that is rare.

Thanks SpecialK. I am definitely going to ask if my count isn't up. I see the nurse practitioner more weeks than the oncologist but she has access to get to the oncologist immediately. I am really a bit ticked off that this hasn't been offered as an option before now.

Do a little research on Papaya Leaf Extract and read the reviews on Amazon...
During chemo 5 years ago, my platelets were extremely low. MO said no chemo
next week. I took like a tablespoon a day of Papyrus Leaf Extract (an organic one), never told my MO
what I did, and the following week they were back to normal!! He was SHOCKED!

Hi all
Platelets were back up this week from 97 last week to 320 this week so was able to get my treatment, Thankful for that and Thankful for all of you and your wonderful support
-
Mime went up from 62 to 194 so I could have my treatment too. Yours really skyrocketed! They were shocked that mine went up as much as they did so you must be a superstar in the platelet dept! If I had to miss another week, I'd have been in a severe depression I'm afraid so I was terribly relieved.
