Worry about aches/pains

I made it through a double mastectomy and am now on arimidex. I feel pretty good physically, but I am already having some anxiety about every ache or pain. I have a great support group and medical team. Any thoughts on how to ease the anxiety before it grows?

In a word, time. I was anxious like you for several years. I now hardly think about cancer recurrence. Best wishes!

You just need to remind yourself that in the majority of cases a pain is just a pain and an ache is just an ache. Easier said than done at first, but as yorkiemom said, time helps. Allowing anxiety to get the better of you will only make it worse. Good luck.

Thanks to both of you.  I'm trying to get back into my normal routines again.  I'd picked up some bad habits through this early process; searching google and focusing on the worst case scenarios.

I took heart from some advice I got from Stage IV ladies--they said not to worry about pain unless it lasts longer than 2 weeks, is chronic, gets worse after time, and feels "different" (deeper, achier, etc.) from normal muscle aches, spasms, and headaches.

If you take hormonals you might feel some joint aches and pains. I freaked out for weeks because I had intermittent hip achiness but realized that it wasn't getting worse and wasn't all the time, so I let the worry go. It stopped after a few months, then migrated to the other hip for a while. It was a side effect from the aromasin I take.

I have mild PTSD from the dx I had and from being my late husband's primary caretaker till he died of cancer 20 years ago. I was very young and I have lasting problems because of it--anxiety from time to time is the main one. I keep Xanax on hand when it appears and use it very sparingly--but it helps. Look up PTSD/anxiety post cancer tx/dx and you'll learn a lot more about what we live with after tx ends. It helped me understand that what I was feeling was very normal and seemed to relieve it somewhat.
