For those who decided on prophylactic BMX, how many of you had cancer in the "good" breast?

Hi there. I had a BMX and did not have cancer in the other breast. My reasons were due mostly to difficult screening. My ILC was not picked up on 3D mammo or ultrasound. It was only picked up on a pre op MRI I had for IDC. I was a DDD so symmetry was a factor for me. Also there were a few abnormal precancerous changes in the non cancer breast. One more reason was because I knew I would refuse chemo and anti hormone therapy so I wanted the more aggressive surgery. Hope that helps. Good luck making your decision.

My suspicious cells in the good breast were found after my BMX. But they were found (hyperplasia), and they are gone--good. I refused a UMX simply because I already knew ILC had a tendency to be multi-focal, and the post-surgical pathology report vindicated me: it was good I went both with my knowledge and intuition.

My breasts were dense, making it even harder for scans to "see" problem tissue. I had 5 "clear" mammos for five years before I found the lump on my own in a self-exam. Because of that, I stopped trusting mammograms completely.

I'm happy with my decision, but dislike the lack of feeling I'll have to live with the rest of my life because of my BMX/recon. But I disliked the feeling that mammos would not catch any potential recurrence more, so I went with BMX.

My left breast was fine. No unusual findings. I had 38D breasts and did a bmx because I did not want scans, dyes and screenings (anxiety provoking for me) every 6 months and I did not want to wear a fake boob to counter the big one I had left.

They found LCIS on my good breast after BMX which was not seen on the MRiI, mammogram or ultrasound..My oncologist said it was good that I had a BMX.

Me too....multi-focal LCIS in the "good" breast...and two tumours in my not so good breast! So glad I had a BMX...felt like It was overkill at the time but a UMX asymmetry bothered me...so glad I did

    5 years on...fantastic!
