Start treatment Feb 6th, scared
I was recently diagnosed with IDC in my left Breast. My lump is 4 1/2 mm on the top and right under my nipple is another one measuring 2 mm. I also have one more spot below that. I am triple positive, with 3-5 lymph nodes cancerous also.
I am scheduled to start Chemo Feb 6. My treatment will be
12 weeks of Taxol, Herceptin. And perjeta. I will have all 3 the first week, then 3 weeks of Taxol, back to all 3. After those 12 weeks I will have Adriamycin and Cyloxan every 2 weeks for 8 weeks.
I will have to have a mastectomy then radiation.
I am trying to reach out to those who have had these treatments. What time except? Did you all lose your hair? How soon after treatment did you lose your hair? What/how did you cope?
In general I'm scared......
Thanks shelabela

Hi!
I had those treatments but did AC first, then THP. I'm not sure how quickly your hair will come out if you do the THP first. I shaved my head before my second infusion of AC because I just didn't want to watch it fall out. I got an awesome wig that looked better than my natural hair. I wore it for six months to work.
To me, THP was gentler than AC, though it did give me mild diarrhea (which I managed with Imodium). AC made me spacey, and it robbed me of my energy. But, I made it through chemo; chemo is doable these days.
My advice to you is to keep a diary of side effects and see if there is a pattern. Then, you can mentally prepare for some of the rougher times. For example, on THP, I'd get my infusion on Wednesday and feel good until Friday, when the diarrhea would start. I'd always be sure to have my Imodium on hand for those days.
Remember, if you do have intolerable side effects, call your oncologist's office. The office should always have a doctor on call. Your oncologist wants you to finish treatment, and should be able to offer suggestions, prescriptions, and more to help you make it through.
Best wishes!

Good afternoon my bc sister! I am currently half way through my herceptin/perjeta/taxol chemo. I did not immediately lose my hair. After 2 treatments I noticed a marked amount of thinning and decided to get a buzz cut. I start AC chemo in March

Hi Shelabela!
Our dx is very similar and I also had nodes involved.
I had tx same as you will, except the Adriamycin and Cyloxan.
It is different for everyone, the SEs. Lost alllllll my hair, beginning day 14 of chemo.
Worst thing for me--smells, nausea and the Big D. Eating was a daily adventure.
The more prepped you are, the better. There is a list on this board for useful things--you can do this!
PM me anytime,
Hugs

I'm 5 years out - just wanted to bring you hope! When I told my Oncologist the day I started chemo was
the most frightening day of my life, he said "That is normal. I hear it all the time."
You can get through this! Sending encouragement!
-
ShelaBela - I would suggest you join the February 2017 Chemo thread. But also take some time to go back and read through the January thread so you can see the tricks those ladies are using.
There are also threads for surgery starting each month or quarter, and threads for rads.

It is SO scary....but not nearly as horrifying as you are imagining.
Before my first treatment I had images of me walking out of the clinic with my head in a bag and being too frail to even walk.
The meds they can give you for side effects are really good these days. You don't have to suffer. I never threw up even once and only felt a little nausea once or twice (then took my meds and was fine!). You will have good and bad days but you will still be able to function and live your life.
Just take it one day at a time and before you know it, you're done. I can hardly believe my final chemo was almost ONE YEAR ago!!

I'm so sorry about your diagnosis. It's normal to feel afraid for sure. As a fellow cancer friend told me recently - "It's not natural to agree to chemo. Anything else in nature would run the other way."
I've been through two rounds of TCHP. My hair came out really fast around days 18-20. I already had bought a wig and had my head buzzed to about a quarter inch. I still have quite a bit of hair, but it's patchy. I kind of wish the rest would fall out!
The first treatment was surreal. With four drugs plus premeds, it took six hours to complete. Now it's only about four hours. I have a port which has saved me from worries about getting all of that through a vein.
I tend to feel pretty good the day of and day after - probably due to the steroids. I have a lot of aches and pains by the following day and that lasts for maybe 24-36 hours. Motrin and sleep seem to be the only thing that helps.
I've been keeping a little journal of SE's and it's helping me to see a pattern - and remember that nothing lasts forever as well! Just keep in touch with your MO's office and they should be able to help you with suggestions or medications.
-
thank you all for the advice! I don't feel as alone now. I had the Genealogy test today. They told me it takes 2-3 weeks for the results.
I already have a wig picked out. Hope that helps me feel better when the time come. A very good friend of mine is a hair stylist and she is going to cut my hair when I start so it won't be so long. I see a few others did that also.
My 13 year old son wants to shave his head when I lose my hair. I can't stop crying about that.

First treatment was yesterday! Was horrible. Threw up 3 times while getting the Herceptin. Then had a horrible reaction on the Taxol. They did say that's normal and the next time I wouldn't be like that. I sure hope not.
Today I feel good, we will see what tomorrow brings
-
Oh dear! So sorry you had such a rough first run. I would certainly find out what they are going to give you differently to counteract all the problems you had. I don't think that was normal from what I read on these threads. Mostly people seem to do fairly well while on treatment, then feel the effects a few days later. I generally had nausea and aches and pains on day 3. Very little vomiting the whole 6 months of taxotere. I'm still on Herceptin and Perjeta, but that is another ball game.
Did they premedicate you with something for nausea and steroids? If not, surely they will next treatment.
I'm sure some who had reactions will join in and tell how their treatments were managed.
So hope you feel better next treatment

There is no reason for nausea. You need to look into the following: Decadron - steroid pills for nausea 2 each the day before, day of & day after; Kytril in your infusion for nausesa; I had several other nausea drugs to take as pills but never needed them. The final heavy hitter is Emend, but it's very expensive.
Did you have Benedryl in your infusion? That's what they usually do the first Taxotere infusion but don't know if Taxol is different.
Are you starting with the Herceptin & Taxol? I know you can't have herceptin & adriamycin together because of possible heart problems. So will they stop the herceptin & then re-start it again after AC to get your 17 infusions? If you're taking Perjeta also, you might try Claretin for the general aches.
Will you have surgery somewhere along the line? Radiation?
-
I have 12 weeks of Taxol, Herceptin and Prejeta. Then 8 bi-weekly treatments of AC . Then surgery.
I go tomorrow for my next appointment. I wrote down all these meds, thank you so much!
-
We'll be thinking of you. Good luck.
-
thank you! Did/are you taking anything the day before? My dr didn't tell me to. Would it help?
Thoughts?
-
shelabela - I had steroid pills to take the day before, day of & day after infusion. They were for nausea and worked.
