Immediate reconstruction fears

Hi there everyone,I'm a newbie to this site and firstly I'd just like to say what wonderful support this site has been to me since my diagnosis. This is my first post and I'd really like to get some advice from ladies who are Her2+ and who have had an immediate recon if I may. I live in Australia and my surgeons say I'm a good candidate for immediate recon after chemo but I just can't shake the anxiety of the whole idea knowing that because I'm Her2+++ er-pr- there is a much higher risk of reoccurrence. By having a recon would this put me at risk for finding a local reccurrance? Has anyone had immediate recon and been fine after? Kindest regards,Mel X

    Hi Melruth

I was HER2 +++ and was told I had to wait for a while to have reconstruction as they wanted to keep an eye on the are and make sure there was no recurrence. But I think it depends on your diagnosis, as in how big, what grade etc. I'm sure your consultant knows what they are doing but maybe get a second opinion and maybe others will reply to you about what happened to them. HOpe all goes well xx

So sorry you have to go through all this. I am Her2+, but did not know it at the time of surgery. Mammogram had only detected dcis, and I opted for bilateral mastectomy due to family history. The Her2 was a surprise and in a different location. It was small and caught early, so I have no misgivings on the reconstruction, and mri can still be done. I had on-step so it was less of a shock to wake up with breasts...very small and different ones, but breasts. Surgery was uneventful. Had more problems with the port surgery yesterday :( It will pass hopefully before infusion next week.

There are many of us on the TP thread who are Her2+ and had immediate reconstruction (either expander to later implant, or direct to implant) without any problem or prohibition. I also have TN friends for who the same is true.

Thanks ladies for replying I really appreciate that. Im catching up with my surgeon in the next couple of weeks and will discuss it then. SpecialK I have read many of your posts and they are always so imformative and uplifting. Being a nurse I have found out how little I knew about Breast cancer until I was diagnosed but now I think I could definitely see myself working in this field in the future. And RebzAmy I have followed you too on this board, you are an inspiration to me and have helped me to get back into a more positive frame of mind when Ive needed it. And NotHerToo I hope your post issues have been sorted xx

Thanks Melruth...port problem cleared up just in time, and lidocaine cream is a wonderful invention. Chemo went fine, and hardly any initial side effects. Hope it stays that way!

Hi there, Just checking back in to update you. I am nearly 3 weeks post surgery after having had a skin sparing mastectomy with an immediate DIEP reconstruction. I am really happy with my decision of having the immediate recon, the recon looks good and I am recovering very well. My pathology report also showed I had a complete response to neoadjuvant therapy in both the breast an lymph nodes so that was great news :)
