I am just trying to find out if anyone else has experienced this. I had a mastectomy with reconstruction in 1997. I developed lymphedema shortly after that. I am very Thankful I have been able to control my cellulitis episodes over the last 20 years. I am very happy I have had no more cancer issues since the initial DCIS in 1997. I consider myself very Lucky because of my choice to have a mastectomy, I did not need to have chemo or radiation.

I am now struggling with the fact I have had cellulitis twice in the last three weeks. I am very sore in shoulder and right arm which is the side of my mastectomy. I work in a factory, so it is often heavy and dirty work. I had to take a fmla because I am currently unable to do my job. I am 61 years old and I need my job and benefits. I am hoping that someone out there has some advice for me...

    I'm sorry about the problem that has brought you here, but glad you found us.

    Repeat cellulitis can sometimes be controlled with low-dose long-term antibiotics. You might get good guidance from an Infectious Disease doctor who has experience with lymphedema-related cellulitis.

    If the job you're doing involves getting dirty, it might be important to protect your skin with long sleeves and gloves (if that's even an option). Sometimes occupational therapists can help solve on-the-job sorts of problems related to necessary adaptations. An occupational therapist also trained in lymphedema treatment would be a bonus, for sure.

    Cellulitis takes a big toll on our bodies, and it takes longer than we think it should to regain our strength. I sure do understand the job pressures, but do take the time to heal completely before considering a return to the workplace.

    I agree with Binney, long term antibiotics could be helpful. I took them for 2 years after endless bouts of cellulitis and living so far from medical help.
