Tamoxifen - air travel - short turnaround

Hi all,

I recently started Tamoxifen and was planning on traveling west coast to east coast and then back less than 48 hours later. Does anyone know whether the length of the flight (about 5 - 5 1/2) + the short turn around, would create any issues? I wouldn't be as concerned about the DVT issue if I wasn't doing such a quick turnaround. I'd ask my oncologist but I'm traveling on Wednesday (today is Monday) and their office's are closed for the holiday - hoping one you ladies might have an answer!

Thanks!

Does your insurer offer an 'advice nurse' service? If so, that would be one possible source of help. And what about your PCP - there should be someone on call at least.

I have been told that fish oil is something of a blood thinner. If you're taking it perhaps it would have a protective effect.

If at all possible, try to stay hydrated on the flight and get up and move around as much as possible. Let the flight attendants know the reason - they may be much more tolerant in that case. Compression stockings are helpful - frequently available at pharmacies and some airport shops. There are also exercises you can do in your seat to improve your circulation:

Thanks Hopeful. I don't take any supplements currently. Not sure about insurance advice nurse - I will check on that - thanks.

I was one who worried about flying to, but last year made several west coast east coast trips and even went to Scotland. I drank plenty of water and did leg and arm raises often in my seat.

    Hi Lvbugs,

Did you do any back to back travel? I think I would be ok if there was a longer on the ground period. As it is, I will be making the return flight about 36 hours later.

One of the trips were from Saturday to Tuesday. Another was west coast to east coast and a two hour layover then to London. I did walk the airport and tried not to sit before boarding.

I second Hopeful's advice. I fly 10-12 hour flights relatively frequently.

If you had any lymph nodes removed, it would be good to be evaluated for compression hand wear and sleeves for flights, even if you don't have lymphedema.
