Question about short term disability

Options

Hello,

I am considering prophylactic bilateral Mastectomy with immediate BR (I am BRCA 2 positive)

I currently do not have short term disability insurance through my employer. Does anybody know if I can obtain a short term disability insurance plan even though I am BRCA 2 positive? How would I go about that? Is short term disability offered through private companies or is this something that is a government plan? I am very confused with all of this and have a really hard time trying to do research online.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Most likely you will not be able to get short term disability insurance with a diagnosis of cancer, but not sure about being BRCA 2 positive. My short term and long term disability insurance are provided through my employer, but I'm sure there are plans, like medical insurance that are private. AFLAC is a well known disability plan.

Research on the internet and try.

If you try for AFLAC you cant already have a dx, I think if I remember correctly you have to have it a year before you can claim for a benefit. This would be a pre=existing so probalby not with short term.

Suezie, Short-term disability is always through the employer. There isn't a government plan or anything like that.

what does your employer do if someone is out for a protracted illness? Say someone broke their leg or was in a car accident? Sometimes companies self-insure for short-term disability (mine does).

You're looking for whatever they do in the instances I described above.

That said, if you're simply having a mastectomy (no recon), you won't be out much more than a week. Reconstruction is another thing altogether. I gather that's a month at home.

You actually can purchase short term disability as an individual, not just through your place of employment. Mutual of Omaha and State Farm offer individual policies, but they may come with a need to be in place for a period of time before use - i.e., you can't purchase coverage and then immediately file for it, and may come with some restrictions regarding pre-existing conditions.

pajim - I was out about 2 weeks with a double mastectomy. The reconstruction/exchange was a snap. I was driving in 3 days.

You won't be out much more than a week for a mastectomy? It's a "snap"??

I was told at least 3- 4 weeks by my Dana Farber surgeon.

What kind of world do we live in where we lose a freaking BREAST and people tell us we go back to work in a week? I understand that a few of us might feel well enough to go back, but that's highly, highly unusual. You aren't supposed to drive until you have full range of motion and the drains themselves are in for at least 10 days!
