Post op infection
Hi there, I had a delayed expander placement on my right breast and prophylactic mastectomy with immediate implant surgery on 6th December. I've recently been hospitalised with an infection. I had surgery yesterday to remove the implant, wash it and the cavity and put it back. I'm staying in hospital to receive IV antibiotics. They say I'm high risk of reinfection and I could loose the implant. Has anyone else experienced post op infections? Any postitive outcomes? I was so hoping I would be able to move forward after recon but it appears my recovery is not going to go as planned. I didn't have radiation treatment which I know can cause complications. I finished AC+T chemo in June. I'm hoping for some positive stories to boost me! Thank you

I don't post much here but when I read your post, I thought I could give you some hope. I don't want to scare you...
I had a proph mast on my right side back in May. I had immediate reconstruction with a TE placed by the PS. I started the fills and then developed an infection 6 weeks later. I was given antib in hospital and strong pills for home. I could not get over the infection and had to have the TE taken out one month later on 8/2. I was treated with more antib after finding the culprit bacteria. I waited til 11/11 and had the TE put back in. So far, all is good. But there isn't a day I don't worry about that happening again. MyPS agreed with the Inf Dis doc that it could go back in. The infection was opportunistic and probably wouldn't happen again. I am having this recon done over the muscle.
I'm sure there will be other women to comment on here. I went to the thread TE trouble over the summer and learned a lot. When I had cancer 9 years ago on the left side, I had no problems at all with the reconstruction. Go figure!
I hope this gives you hope. I felt awful over the summer, but I have hope now.
Good luck.

in July I had prophylactic Bi-lat mast with expanders placed. (I'm BRCA 1). Two weeks later I was back in the hospital, with a bad infection. Ispent 10 days in the hospital. I had sepsis. My PS cleaned out the wound and I was put on antibiotics. I spent the next 6 weeks on strong IV antibiotics at home with a pic line. Though it delayed my recovery because the antibiotics wiped me out, since then I've had no problems. I'm now finished with my expansion and waiting 6 months for the implant exchange.

I had infection post bmx with te placements. Did abx for 7 days, nothing. 5 days in hospital on IV, a little better. Home IV set up for another week, and better. Hang in there. Strong abx should do the trick then you'll need to wait prob 6 months before any other elective sx.
