Hi I have Idc. I got a pet scan and bone scan on tues/weds. The onc. Called this morning just saying to call back or that they would call me again. Just wondering if he would call with bad news. It is the Friday before Christmas and I have more appointments next week so I wouldn't think they would call with bad news before all that? Does anybody know or have experience to share

Not to scare you but when I got my Cancer DX they called a 4:55 when they closed at 5 to call them back. I think they should have waited till the next day, I couldnt sleep all nite worried.

Don't try to read anything into how the onc.'s practice is operated. Here are some theories (you'll notice that you can't tell what your missed phone call will mean!):

    • Some practices want the first contact with a new patient to be with the Onc., positive or negative.
    • Some Onc's want to be the one who gives the good news. (Maybe they're thinking if you ever need an Onc., you'll come back?)
    • Some want to make sure you get the straight story about bad news, so you won't confabulate it into something worse than it is.

There are lots of others. So don't try to read anything into it, unless you know that your Onc. has a particular practice when conveying this kind of news, and then what that practice is.

Focus on enjoying your holiday. Why not? If it's bad news, what's the downside to focusing on the holiday celebration?

And if it's good news, don't spoil the holiday for no reason.

My onc calls with news good or bad because she knows that patients are worried and waiting to hear. (Having been together for a while now we use email as well.) Maybe your onc has good news and wants you to know it so you can enjoy the weekend more.

My BS and my radiologist have called with both types of news. The radiologist with my diagnosis the day after my biopsy so that I could get in to see the BS the next day. My BS's nurse called after my mastectomy with news that they had gotten all the cancer and that there were no other invasive tumors found. They didn't want me to worry.

It can vary from Dr to Dr and case to case as to rather or not the Dr calling has 'good' or 'bad' info. Also there are 'degrees' of 'bad' and 'good' news in everything we experience in life and a lot can depend on how you hoose to look at it and allow it to effect us.

In my case - the morning after my mammo, US and FNB, the Radiologist called me at 8 (Fri) with the path. report - as expected - IBC. So yes, that was path. was bad BUT it was good to know so that I was able to get to see my Surgeon on Mon. Had my PET Scan one morning the next week - got a call from Dr saying and area along my lower jaw had 'lit up'. Got into to the ENT Dr for a biopsy that afternoon. Next morning at about 10, the ENT Dr called me - as expected nothing there. So again, bad as it showed an area that might be a problem but good because it was rapidly checked out and there was no problem.

The day of my core needle biopsy, the radiologist asked me if I wanted him to call directly with the results, or if I wanted my family doctor to do so. I said I wanted the radiologist to call directly since he was the one doing the test. But it turned out that they still contacted my doctor first, who told them he wanted to tell me face to face. I really thought they should have honored my request that the radiologist deliver the news instead of deferring to my family doctor's preference. Face to face is nice, but he did not seem to know much about the path report. I asked him some questions, but he seemed clueless. I would have preferred speaking directly with the experts at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance where I had my mammos, U/S and biopsy. I have a lot to learn about how to navigate the system.
