DIEP Flap Surgery and Medicare

I have Medicare as my primary insurance with Blue Cross Blue Shield as my secondary insurance. I had a consult with a plastic surgeon who told me that Medicare does not cover DIEP surgery. She said if Blue Cross Blue Shield was my primary insurance than it would be covered. I am very confused because I have seen others mention that Medicare has covered their surgery. Any input would be appreciated! TIA.

    I dont think that is correct medicare covers a portion blue cross blue shield will pay the rest. You are covered. Thank Bill Clinton for that one.

    Sounds like you are on original medicare plus a gap policy with BCBS. I agree with Meow. I'm pretty sure reconstruction of whatever kind from breast surgery is covered. My suggestion would be to call Medicare directly. Maybe this particular PS doesn't want to accept or bill Medicare.

    Anything that Medicare covers at the standard 80% will be covered by your medigap BCBS policy with whatever specifics you chose when you signed up.
