Drain Removal
Hello
Does it hurt when these drains come out? They will probably be coming out soon. Is it done at your drs office or do I have to go to the hospital to get them removed? I have my port going in right after drains come out.

My surgeon removed the drains in her office, but all docs are different. It wasn't pleasant but it's very quick and I don't remember it as painful.
As for ports, my surgeon would only install or remove my port in the hospital under general anesthesia. Good luck Melinda.

I had 4 drains, 3 didn't hurt coming out. The 4th I screamed. Done in BS office
My port was put in outpatient at my hospital. 4 years later, I still have it.

Didn't hurt for me; just felt a weird 'slithering' sensation and a little stinging when they cut the stitch.
Make sure they have your drain bulbs OPEN before they remove it though, if they're shut, they'll suction while being pulled out and I'm told that's exceptionally painful.

I had them out in the office at the first check-up 7 days after surgery, Felt weird but not painful.
My surgeon snipped the outside stitch, I took a deep breath and then he pulled them out one at a time... Whoop, squiggle, shiver then relief of having no drains was wonderful!
I went to Starbucks for a nice Java chip to celebrate!

My experience was much the same. Weird, but not painful. Bulbs open for sure

Hi! Just thought I'd add my experience. Yesterday I had one of 4 drains removed in my PS's office, 3 days post-op. I felt absolutely nothing. It wasn't even uncomfortable. I hope others having theirs removed in the future have an experience similar to mine!

Hi, I just had my drain removed 3 days post op as well and it was not too bad. Felt like a bandaid being ripped off, quick burn and then relief of not having to carry that thing around anymore.
G luck, hope yours is not too bad as well!!

My funny drain removal story. My ps, his assistant and my dd were all in the room. I was told to cough as they were removed. I coughed, and coughed and coughed. Suddenly, I realized they were all laughing. Apparently, the drains had long been pulled out but I just kept coughing.. So, no, I didn't feel a thing!

I just felt a slight sensatation when the drains were removed in Dr's office - 1st one out at 2 weeks post op and the other at 4 weeks. Did develope a seroma from the 2nd one.
My port was put in under general anesthesia in the hospital OR. Some will have a port put in under twilight sedation. Never went to recovery - went straight to discharge. Surgeon had told Hubby that all went fine and it'd be probably 2 yrs before I'd be ready to leave so he should go ahead and feed horses and they call him when to come get me - wrong I was ready to leave before he even got out of the parking lot before he got called. (My port was put in 10 weeks before UMX as I did 4 DD A/C neoadjuvant.)
