The most exotic person in my family tree is/was......

my paternal grandfather. He was in seminary, studying for the Roman Catholic priesthood in Poland. But he met a lovely indentured servant girl at the market and chose her. They came to America, had a fine life in Minnesota, begat ten children. But, then, there is the auntie who did a murder-suicide. Not sure which is more "exotic."

my Irish great-great-grandmother. Her family lived in Indiana. When she was 12 years old, she and her stepfather walked 50 miles into Illinois and heard Abraham Lincoln speak in 1858! I have a doll quilt she made for my mom when my mom (who was named after her) was a baby.

my father. His dad died when my dad was 12. He had to quit school and get two jobs to support my grandma and his baby brother. One job was washing glasses for these mob men at a restaurant. Lots of stories.

We seem stuck. I don't really have a particularly exotic person in my family (that I know, anyway) but, a relative I admired was my paternal grandmother. She had a quiet strength and warmth that I inspired me. She was educated to be a teacher (I copied that) but married and raised a family during the Depression and WWII. She had many challenges in her life, but remained kind, open, and a positive light for our whole family. She's the grandma I've wanted to be.

My favorite these past few years are chocolate snow balls, chocolate dough rolled in confectionary sugar- ....but appreciate the work required for cut-out decorated sugar cookies. My neighbor brings me a plate of cookies - each one is delicious.
