Bone scan showed lesions, waiting for MRI
Hi; It's been 3 years since I finished radiation for intraductal carcinoma with micrometastasis in the sentinel lymphnode and since I've spent time on this site. I should have stayed connected. And I shouldn't have fallen behind on follow-up imaging. I guess I didn't think a mastectomy, chemo, radiation, and hormone therapy would have left any trace of early stage cancer behind.
Approx 6 months ago, I noticed pain in my rib cage on the treatment side. The pain was minor at first. It went away then came back a bit worse. Of course, I diagnosed myself with the help of Internet searches. I was convinced I had costochondritis and I could easily relieve symptoms with anti inflammatory meds. Two months ago, the pain was so bad I could barely walk. I saw a local surgical oncologist as I new patient. I agreed to a bone scan in the midst of taking on a challenging new job. A lapse in health insurance seemed like a good enough reason to postpone following up on the results. A couple of weeks ago, alarmed by extreme shortness of breath, I finally listened to my doctors, who told me the bone scan revealed lesions on my rib cage and an MRI was imperative. I've left the new job, enrolled in state-funded health insurance, and am scheduled for an MRI later this week. So now, after confident my self-diagnosis, stupid reasons for falling behind with follow-up imaging, and overall neglectful attitude... now I'm scared.
Please don't do what I did. All the mounting responsibilities in my life became excuses to neglect personal healthcare responsibility. But all those things... including my responsibility to take care of my elderly parents... are exactly why I should never have neglected the duty to take care of myself. Hindsight is 20/20, I guess.

Chrisesta- sorry you are facing this. I understand how taking care of others can make you not find time to take care of yourself. Hoping your doctors have a good plan in place for you to control this. I know others with similar experiences will be by soon to give some guidance. Just wanted to stop in and send along support.

Hi Chrisesta67,
I am sorry that you are going through that.
I had same situation. I was taking care of my elderly father. Then , my mom diagnosed with breast cancer. Her treatment took so long.
In last ten years I had no chance of taking care of my self or focus my life. Now, I am starting to have pain in my right breast.
I am going for mammogram soon.
I just wanted to share my situation with you. So, you don't feel that you are alone.
I hope and pray your treatment plan will be successful.
God bless
Zohra

Hoping the MRI shows good news. Keep us posted

Thank you for the kind reply, Zohra. I have to admit, I'm pretty much out ofmy head while I wait to find out the results of the MRI I had a couple of days ago. My gut feeling is breast cancer metastasized to the bone. The pain in my chest wall, ribs, and back is undeniable. So, I'm steeling myself for the worst.
I do hope your mammogram goes well. Thank you for reminding me that I'm not alone. Please let us know about the results of your mammogram when you are able.

Praying that everything goes well for you... I have been taking care of 4 family members two brothers one sister and a sister-in-law in the past 5 years that we're in the nursing home.. three of them has passed away... My older sister is doing okay. But I was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2016. ... And it is so hard to have to take care of them and take care of yourself also. But with God's help we can make it. Keep us informed.
