Traci, yes, just one overnight. That seems so short, doesn't it? My SIL just had her gallbladder removed and she was in the hospital for 3 days! But from what I've seen online 1 overnight sounds standard.

I am having left MX Dec 9th. I too am looking for button up shirts, and they are so hard to find. I cant run around all day in PJ's although I would. But I need to get up and get dressed. I will be sleeping in a recliner and I am a single lady so do know my daughter from Oregon will be here a few nites, then not sure. I was told in the hospital 1-2 nites. I am hoping we all have speedy recovery, as this is the holiday season. Something I have never liked till I had grandchildren now this will always be in my holiday memories.
-
Goincrzy8, welcome to the "club." I plan on ordering some shirts from L.L. Bean because they always have button-up shirts, though I don't like their prices. I won't be ordering too many, that's for sure! I think I'll check Lands' End as well because they typically have buttoned shirts and may be a little cheaper. I'll be praying your recovery is a speedy one. I'm amazed at how many women say they felt pretty good after a few days. Glad to hear your daughter will be with you and hopefully the worst of it will be behind you by the time she leaves. One thing is for certain, we'll watch all the Christmas movies we want this year and not feel one ounce of guilt, lol!
-
check amazon for some cute flannel shirts. Inexpensive. I but a lot on Amazon like all my Christmas toys so I have free shopping but still worth it to get a good deal
I also felt pretty good after survey. Mine was 11/9 and iwas up and about a day later. Sore and needed lots of rest but around and sitting with my kids
-
Goincrzy8--g luck with your Dec surgery too. We will all be in the same boat next month, resting and healing and hopefully all of us in nice comfy button up shirts, lol.
RedemptiveSufferer--yes it is crazy that we are in and out so fast, but hopefully that means we are not in too much pain and can enjoy the comforts of home and holiday movies!! I like that idea!
-
Hiii Scaredashell! I am glad to see things are healing up for you! Thanks for the info on Amazon, I do a lot of holiday shopping on there for my son, so will check that out. Glad to hear you were up and moving about a few days after taking it easy.
I am super nervous about surgery but anxious to get the mass out and check nodes.
Best wishes on continued healing!
-
yes, Scaredashell! Thanks for the Amazon suggestion! Also it's SO GOOD to hear that you were up and moving so soon! I've been anticipating the worst yet you help me to hope for the best!
-
I am happy when I see the ladies who have gone to surgery before us and they are doing amazing. Because of the wait, it is scary and I can't wait for this part of the waiting to be over. WIsh I had a crystal ball for the next few months.
-
Hi everyone,
I updated my original post to include everyone's surgery date and procedure. Take a look and let me know if I missed anyone, or if there are any updates.
Journey
-
Goincrzy8: I agree! It's extremely comforting and encouraging to hear that others have sailed through what we're about to experience! Hopeful we'll do as well!
MyJourneys: What a great idea!! Thank you for assembling that list!! Will be easier to refer to that so we can keep those here in our thoughts & prayers. Well done!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!! -
MyJourneys: thank you for taking the time to do that. We are all in this together and can support each other and check in!
Hope everyone enjoys the holiday this week with friends and loved ones.
-
I'll be thinking of all you having MX's in December. A tough time to have received this diagnosis, but there sure does not seem like any time is good. Sorry you are need to be here and the only advice I might offer is to rely on each other. Hugs to you all with love.
-
thanks Magiclight!
-
Hi MyJourneys,
Here's an update for your list.... My surgery is Dec. 2 (next Friday!). MX on right with immediate reconstruction (DIEP). So glad to wait until after Thanksgiving and really looking forward to dinner with my family tomorrow. Haven't sent Christmas cards out in years but it looks like I'll have time to do it this year!
Sending prayers and well wishes to all!
-
SPECTER55, thank you for the helpful links, and for your offer of the shirt!
-
Thank you, MagicLight!
-
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! Have a wonderful day tomorrow!
-
Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. Kind of emotional today, but read a post on another thread that gave me an "ah ha" moment. She wrote: Because there are no organs or bones or muscles moved around you are really just dealing with the incision. I was like WTH I got this, Spending time with family and friends is more important than being lopsided and not having a left breast. I am not a Black Friday shopper so today is day for me.
-
Goincrzy8: LOVE your ah ha moment! That speaks volumes of comfort. Thanks for sharing that. Makes me feel better, too.
JCN16: Welcome! And I was thinking exactly along your lines... maybe I'll actually address Christmas cards this year while watching tons of Christmas flicks!
Magic Light: Thank you for the advice & hugs. :-) The support I've already received has made such a big difference already.
Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! -
So did some weekend shopping. Actually found some button up shirts, Brand new with tags at the local goodwill. Lucky day today everything half off, so 3 shirts for $9.00. Also went out and got a new recliner, this one is a power recliner and also a great price....Merry Christmas to me. For those with no reconstruction, have you thought about prosthetics and any decisions?
I am hoping for a quick recovery my grandkids know I will be off work and they want to come stay with me the week before for Christmas while son and DIL are at work. They will make the healing go smoother, my grandson *8* already has movies picked out for us to watch. Gotta love that boy.
-
Goingcrzy8: Merry Christmas to you, indeed! Glad you found some amazing deals. I felt that way about the hospital bed my husband found. :-) Not what we wanted to spend $$ on but when you need something like that you're thankful when you find a steal! I'm doing reconstruction, so sorry I don't have input there.
Speaking of reconstruction, I was ALL set for TE immediately following MX w/implant later. THEN a girlfriend of mine I hadn't talked to in awhile called the day before Thanksgiving. She informed me she had implants following her BMX 6 yrs. ago and has been in chronic, daily pain every day since then. She says it was the biggest mistake of her life and if she could do it all over again she'd do the TRAM or DIEP. Of course, now I'm second guessing my decision. I'll meet w/my PS this Thurs. prior to my Dec. 6 surgery. Hoping he can reassure me of the decision I made or else help me change my mind, if I should. I feel like it's a little late in the game to be changing plans but I obviously want what's best for the long haul. Has anyone else here been waffling between options?? -
RedemptiveSufferer, I wonder if your friend had under-muscle TE's. I've read that some women experience pain from those, and the under-muscle implants, for a long time. I'm getting an immediate over-muscle implant (unless something happens and they have to do something different during the surgery).
It's the TEs that tend to be the problem, most of the time (from what I've read). Especially under-muscle TEs. Ask your BS if he can do over-the-muscle TE's or go direct to implants over the muscle.
My BS does all TEs and implants over the muscle now unless there's a compelling reason not to.
-
GoinCrazy8, I updated the date of your surgery.
Jcn16, I added your surgery.
I'm getting nervous, but have been so busy I haven't had time to mentally prepare.
-
Hi RedemptiveSufferer, I met with my plastic surgeon last week and he gave me both options I am also wavering between the two and I'm not sure what I want to do. For now I will have the te placed at the time of surgery and I guess I will have time while I'm healing to make a final decision. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the fact that I will not have a breast on that side and that I will have something else placed there.
-
MyJourneys: My friend did have it under the muscle and that is what my surgeon does as well. I'll ask about TE over the muscle. An immediate implant wasn't an option. Honestly, I'm not even sure if I'm a candidate for a TRAM because of a previous C-section. In my PS's defense, he was evaluating me for that when I practically cut him off to tell him I had done my research and knew I didn't want anything that invasive, lol! Guess I need to do more research between now and my next appt.! I'll add that my friend has a completely different build than I do. She's extremely slender w/not an ounce of fat on her body. Not sure if that makes a difference or not.
tigil17: It's a lot to think about, isn't it?? DIEP isn't an option where I live unless I want to travel 1.5 hrs. to either Birmingham, AL or Nashville, TN. Having 3 kids, that's not real convenient or else I'd consider it. Initially, my thought was to go w/what's less invasive so TRAM was out of the question. Yet, an implant requires "upkeep" every 10 yrs or so I think I read? I'm learning w/cancer there are always options and that I don't like any of them. Guess I need to be thankful for what's available. *sigh* -
Hi Redemptive! DIEP is not an option w my plastic surgeon either. I also had c-section w my son, but he said I could go with either option of implant or TRAM. I leaned towards implant despite the replacement factor of every 10 years, but then I started wondering if I should consider the TRAM instead. Its a very hard decision really like other things on this journey so far. Very grateful for this forum tho and to be able to chat w others facing same fears and bouncing ideas around does help a lot!
For now, I guess its one step at a time.
Hope your last pre surgery week goes well. I have a lot going on this week between work prep for me being out and home stuff.
Have a good Monday!
-
Thank you, Traci! Will praying for your decision (and mine!) and hope you get everything done you want to accomplish this week. My list is long, too, and it's just now starting to feel as if this is REALLY happening. I think I need a TUMS. ;-) You have a fantastic Monday as well.

Redemptive Sufferer, it's just how you describe - I didn't like any of my options either. It took me a long time to decide. Simultaneously I was consulting with a local oncology surgeon and then traveling down to Penn in Philadelphia (1-1.5 hours) for a second opinion. What I was hoping to do was a lumpectomy, but after additional biopsies revealed a total of 3 locations of DCIS, both surgeons recommended a mastectomy. I kept trying to decide between local treatment and Penn, TE and DIEP. I'd have these little pep talks with myself - trying to force a decision. What finally made the choice clear was the plastic surgeons. The local PS my oncology surgeon referred me to said I wasn't a candidate for DIEP and his approach was that of a cosmetic surgeon. (He recommended going bigger and having surgery on my healthy breast to match.) What the local PS should have told me is that he doesn't do DIEP. My Penn PS says I'm a good candidate for DIEP and understands I just want to get back to my life as quickly as possible. That did it for me. Not looking forward to surgery on Friday, but I am looking forward to getting it behind me.
I can imagine how much harder this decision would have been if my kids were younger (they are 23 and 19). Hoping that your next visit brings you clarity and confidence in your decision.

My bilateral mastectomy is this Friday, Dec.2nd. I was so lucky to get a consult with dR. Kristalyn Gallagher at UNC-Chapel Hill. Her special area of expertise is in lymph node mapping. If senitinal nodes don't map on the side that has scars from the old lumpectomy, Dr. Gallagher will do auxiliary reverse mapping to conserve the nodes that serve the arm and help me avoid lymphedema! Only fly in the ointment is that it is 2 and a half hours from home. But I am so confident in my treatment plan
