How soon after lumpectomy is the affected breast mammoed/imaged?

My docs tell me one year but I was surprised by that... read 6 mos. was recommended for affected breast only (then resuming regular mammos on both breasts at 12 mos. after surgery) but that recommendation was dated 2010 so that may have changed. It's hard for me to discern what is scar tissue from the surgery vs. what might be cancer when I do a self-check, and my paranoia/anxiety is building... wwyd? I have a follow-up apt w/ my onco on Dec 12 and I'm going to ask for a mammo.

My first mammogram on my BC breast was six months after radiation was completed, which is a common recommendation. They want to wait for the breast to heal. So my first mammo was well over a year after the BC was removed from surgery.

Some have earlier mammograms, but this is due to extenuating circumstances.

My first mammo was also six months out, but my doctors were very clear that the purpose of this imaging was to establish a post-surgical baseline, not to look for cancer. The first "regular" mammo was one year out. Scar tissue continues to build/change for a couple of years, so self exams are going to be concerning for quite a while.

It's good that your onc appointment is coming right up. Feel absolutely free to point out every lump and bump and ask him to explain exactly what you are feeling. For me, a response of, "Benign" is not sufficient. I finally learned to ask exactly what each lump and bump is.

And yes, it does get easier.
