    HI pari143,

We're sorry you and your mom are experiencing this concern. You're sure to get some great insight soon from others here, but in the meantime, you may want to check out the main Breastcancer.org site's page on PET Scans for some good information on how this test works and what the results show.

We hope this helps and are sending our best thoughts to you and your mom!

The PET scan is a tool to show areas of concern. The MRI will give more specific information about that area. Hoping the MRI has good news

KBeee is right; the PET scan highlights areas of concern. But PET scans also produce false positives, so their findings often need to be confirmed by other scans and biopsies. For example, three PET scans showed something light up on my left femoral neck (hip). My oncologist would have biopsied it, but it didn't show up on a CT scan or an MRI, so she considers it to be a false positive.

Hopefully, your Mom's findings will be a false positive, too. But, if they aren't, the next step would be to biopsy if possible.

    ((Hugs)) and best wishes!

Pari, PET scans are used to find areas of cells that are growing rapidly. They inject radioactive sugar. The sugar gets eaten by the fast growing cells and they look for the radioactivity on the scan.

As a result lots of things light up. Areas of inflammation, the entire GI tract, and tumors. (Every time I have one my rear end lights up because I get injections there everyone month. No cancer in my rump I assure you)

The MRI will take a closer look at the area to see whether this is just inflammation or whether there is a cause for concern. If they find cause for concern they may biopsy the area to confirm. A biopsy is the gold standard for determining someone has cancer.

I wish her and you good luck!
