Money may be the husk of many things, but not the kernel. It brings you food, but not appetite; medicine, but not health; acquaintances, but not friends; servants, but not loyalty; days of joy, but not peace or happiness. -Henrik Ibsen
-
In a world in which we are exposed to more information, more options, more philosophies, more perspectives than ever before, in which we must choose the values by which we will live (rather than unquestioningly follow some tradition for no better reason than that our own parents did), we need to be willing to stand on our own judgment and trust our own intelligence—to look at the world through our own eyes—to chart our course and think through how to achieve the future we want, to commit ourselves to continuous questioning and learning—to be, in a word, self-responsible.
Nathaniel Branden -
Forever is composed of nows.
--Emily Dickinson -
When one begins to practice simplicity, the ego is deprived of the very
strategy by which it sustains itself.Nothing will deflate the ego more
effectively than to be recognized for what it is.It lives by pretension.
It dies when the mask is torn away and the stark reality is exposed to
the gaze of others.Simplicity also avails in braking the tyranny of things.Ostentation, artificiality, ornamentation, pretentious style, luxury—all
require things. One requires few things to be one's self, one's age, and
one's moral, intellectual, or spiritual stature. What one is does
not depend upon what one has.
Albert E. Day -
The essential difference between the unhappy, neurotic type person and the happy, normal person is the difference between get and give. The unhappy person is concerned with: the world is against me, what's in it for me, what are people doing to me, and so forth. When your central theme in life is getting, you usually do get headaches. But the happy person is looking toward what he or she can do, what they can give, what they can accomplish.
Joe D. Batten and Leonard C. Hudson -
"Dignity does not consist in possessing honors,
but in deserving them."
Aristotle
-
A happy person is not a person in a
certain set of circumstances,
but rather a person with a
certain set of attitudes.
- Hugh Downs -
We all have within us a deep sense of what we need, and what
is right and true for us. To access this we need to pay attention
to our feelings and our intuition. We need to learn to listen
deeply to ourselves and to trust what we hear. And we need
to risk acting on what we feel to be true. Even if we make
mistakes, we must do this in order to learn and grow.
Shakti Gawain -
Dreams come true; without that possibility, nature would not incite us to have them. -John Updike
-
Character is higher than intellect... A great soul will be strong to live, as well as to think.
--Ralph Waldo Emerson -
The moment you become miserly you are closed
to the basic phenomenon of life: expansion, sharing.
The moment you start clinging to things,
you have missed the target.
Because things are not the target,
you, your innermost being, is the target -
not a beautiful house, but a beautiful you;
not much money, but a rich you;
not many things, but an open being,
available to millions of things.
- Osho -
All my experience of the world teaches me that in ninety-nine cases out of a hundred the safe side and the just side of a question is the generous side and the merciful side. -Anna Brownell Jameson

Hi all,
Five years out and another clear mammogram, both breasts. They keep taking extra shots of my good breast though. Keeping tabs on something there? For the first time my results letter noted I had dense breasts. Interesting. This must be something new for the breast imaging center, or has Illinois law changed? It's never been noted before, though I've been told that by my cancer doctors. Frankly I was hoping the AI treatment and age would lower their density. I see my SO on Monday, so will ask.
Thanks for all your postings, Jackie. Keeping this going for us veterans.
-
Doxie- there is a new way of imaging dense breasts--I assusmed it was only a problem for younger women----maybe they are noting it in order to use that in the future with insurance? I was told mine was dense the first mammogram, at 40, but my doctor said wait a few years, they will be ok
and they were. Until one turned on me at 57!
-
Congrats on your five yrs. Doxie. You never quit worrying --- but the milestones sure feel good and help sooth those treacherous worries just before time for the yearly mammograms. May you always have what you got this time.
Hugs and Blessings,
Jackie

Redheaded1,
I'm 60 and they are still dense!! Went through menopause 13 years ago, too.
Looks like I have to live with them this way and hope problems are caught early through self-breast exams. That's how I caught my BC. It was between mammograms and was where it could have easily been seen if it had existed a few months earlier. No dense tissue was in the way as it was right next to my skin. It grew really quickly, thus the high Ki67 and chemo.
So now the question of continuing on AIs another 5 years. Have until April to decide.
-
They are now using ABUS (whole breast ultrasound) to image dense breasts at my hospital.

In our rough and rugged individualism, we think of gentleness as weakness, being soft and virtually spineless. Not so!Gentleness includes such enviable qualities as having strength under control, being calm and peaceful when surrounded by a heated atmosphere, emitting a soothing effect on those who may be angry or otherwise beside themselves, and possessing tact and gracious courtesy that causes others to retain their self-esteem and dignity.Instead of losing, the gentle gain.Instead of being ripped off and taken advantage of, they come out ahead! -Charles Swindoll
-
They are using ABUS at my center also. Doxie, I am so glad you found yours when you did. Mine was caught on a mammogram. I was quite relieved when none of my doctors were able to find it on exam either.....I do my best with self exams but always wonder if I am missing something. I think we all become more tentative about everything after a BC diagnosis.

This life is yours.Take the power to choose what you want to do and do it well.Take the power to love what you want in life and love it honestly.Take the power to walk in the forest and be a part of nature.Take the power to control your own life.No one else can do this for you.Nothing is too good for you—you deserve the best.Take the power to make your life healthy, exciting, and worthwhile. The time is now.Take the power to create a successful, happy life. - Susan Polis Schutz

When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left and could say, I used everything you gave me.

"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them."
-- John F. Kennedy -
Happy thanksgiving everyone.

Among the humble and great alike, those who achieve success do so not
because fate and circumstance are especially kind to them. Often the
reverse is true. They succeed because they do not whine over
their fate but take whatever has been given to them and
go on to make the most of their best.
Sidney Greenberg -
Love the Thanksgiving quote and the JFK one too. Thank you for doing this.
-
A person's mind may be likened to a garden, which may be intelligently cultivated or allowed to run wild; but whether cultivated or neglected, it must, and will, bring forth. If no useful seeds are put into it, then an abundance of useless weed-seeds will fall therein,
and will continue to produce their kind.
Just as gardeners cultivate their plots, keeping them free from weeds, and growing the flowers and fruits which they require, so may a person tend the garden of his or her mind, weeding out all the wrong, useless, and impure thoughts, and cultivating toward perfection the flowers and fruits of right, useful, and pure thoughts. By pursuing this process, a person sooner or later discovers that he or she is the master-gardener of his or her soul, the director of his or her life. -James Allen -
Pause then at this thanksgiving season and give thanks for the miracle
of selfhood. Give thanks for yourself, for your health and strength
and energy. Ponder the miracle of your body, which, without
your conscious thought, controls heartbeat and respiration,
digests food, compounds chemicals, renews cells, combats disease,
heals wounds, and maintains equilibrium among its huge and
intricate array of separate parts.
Wilferd A. Peterson -
A human being is a part of the whole, called by us "Universe,"
a part limited in time and space. We experience ourselves, our
thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest--a
kind of optical illusion of our consciousness. This delusion is a
kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and
to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must
be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of
compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of
nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely,
but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of
the liberation and foundation for inner security. -
It is those who have a deep and real inner life who are best able to deal with the irritating details of outer life. -Evelyn Underhill
