Financial resources for reconstruction-CANNOT afford it
Hi ladies, I haven't had reconstruction yet because I simply cannot afford it. I have 2 small children and we have gone through a lot as a family financially. There are not any breast reconstruction surgeons that take Medicaid. I have met with a very reputable plastic surgeon that specilizes in breast reconstruction that was recommended by my oncologist. I simply cannot afford it. What are my options? Where can I get help?. I am 2 years out and anxious to fix my breast so I can just feel normal. I would greatly appreciate any input.

I was under the impression that reconstruction must be covered by medical insurance for women who have had breast cancer surgery at least mastectomy not sure about lumpectomies.
-
I search and medicare does cover reconstruction. I would try and find surgeons that take medicaid.
I am sure you can find one might have to travel, looks like coverage for medicaid can vary state to state.

Many docs will not take Medicaid due its lower rate of reimbursement compared to other insurances. Can you call your state Medicaid office and ask them if they can give you some referrals of PS who would take it?
-
Reconstruction due to breast cancer is at no cost to the patient.

Mandy, that is not true. Insurance is required to cover recon, but doctors are not required to take insurance, be it private, or Mdicaid. Even with insurance, there may be co-pays and deductibles.
Wicked made a great suggestion. Even if you have to travel a bit, hopefully, a plastic surgeon who takes Medicaid can be found. Wishing you the best

Have you tried any state funded public hospital near you? There is one near me and it is a NCI Center, they take Medicaid.

You should be able to contact the entity that administers your benefits, either the state or the insurance plan, there should be a number for customer service on the back on your identification card. Ask them to give you the names of plastic surgeons who are considered network providers for your Medicaid plan.

Sending hugs and prayers that you'll find a surgeon to get the reconstruction done.
