Bone scan negative, but MRI positive for bone mets

Hey all. It's been a crazy two weeks for me, and I'm just so stressed. I finished the rough part of chemo in January and have 3 more herceptin only treatments to go. I was NED after lumpectomy in January. Well two weeks ago at my last herceptin, they told me my liver enzymes were elevated so MO ordered a CT scan just to be on the safe side. During that same week, my surgeon had ordered a bone scan because I was having lower back pain. When I had previously brought the back pain up to the other MO in the practice and also my RO, they both said no way could it be mets to my spine because I had such a good outcome. My surgeon is a very cautious man and ordered the scan anyway. He also wanted an MRI if the scan was negative. So the CT scan came back with just fatty liver, and the bone scan just showed old age. I had the MRI yesterday and my surgeon called today and said they found two lesions about 7mm each on the L1 and L2 which isn't even where I have pain. He told me he ran into one of my MO's at a meeting this morning and he wants a PET scan done. The surgeon said everyone is shocked. My mind is so scrambled. Anyone have this happen? My head is just racing.

    Thanks exercise. Everybody really thought I was in the clear. I guess cancer is just that sneaky. I just wish that MRI could be wrong.

    So sorry for what you are going through. So nice to have someone so thorough on your team. One thing I have learned in this process is scans beget scans. My MO trusts pet scans most. Many like bone scans most. I am sending good thoughts your way and hope you get some good news.

    They will hopefully do further testing to clarify it. Keep us posted. Sorry you are dealing with this.

    Hey all. Wanted to let you know I had the PET scan and it showed nothing. My surgeon is so puzzled about the MRI. He said he is choosing to go with the PET results, but I have to meet with MO next Thursday to get his opinion. This cancer life is not easy on the nerves. Thank you all for your concern. I'll update again once i see my MO.

    Glad to hear the PET scan showed nothing. It will be interesting to hear from the MO why the MRI showed lesions, though. Hang in there!

    sounds like good news! Hopefully those spots are something other thancancer.

    Hey everybody! My MO seems pretty confident that the PET scan is correct and I have no cancer. He feels the MRI picked up pools of blood vessels. We'll repeat the MRI in 3 months to look for any changes, but he strongly feels the PET would have picked up mets. So now I try to live normally and try not to think about that next MRI! Ugh. More waiting. Thanks to all for being there for me!

    Fidget I was reading your story and riding the roller coaster with you. Brutal. I believe the PET shows all, so you are good. Sure of it. Keep us posted!

    I hope you're right NoWhyTolt. I saw my MO today. He is scheduling the new MRI for me. He says he still feels confident that it's not cancer even though the first MRI looked bad. He said the best case would be to see no change. He said if the spots are gone, we won't know what they were, and if they are larger then that is bad. He also said even though anything in the cancer world is possible, he personally has never had a patient with a false negative PET scan. I would be the first. But hey, we all know I like to be special!

    False alarms can cause so much stress even after you hear good news. So glad to hear you are NED. Living with cancer fear is hell.

    Hey everyone! I had my MRI last week and yesterday my MO told me the good news--no mets! I almost didn't get too excited until he asked me if I wanted my port out. I think that's when it seemed real. I hate that even with good news it still sits in the back of my mind that some little cells could be lurking around waiting to surprise me, but for now, I'm going to try and enjoy the holidays and try to live my life as happily as possible. This time last year chemo was kicking my butt. Thanks to all of you for your support. It has meant so much to me. Hugs to all!!

    Hi Fidget, I am so happy for you that it's not mets. What a relief.

    My recent MRI showed a 6mm lesion on my spine too. My oncologist said I could do a PET now or repeat a MRI in three months. May I know whether the spots disappeared or remained the same in the second MRI? How did they rule out cancer in this MRI?

    Thank you! That's the plan. I'm starting the holidays off right! I found out that my port comes out on the 29th which is my birthday. Best birthday ever!
