NuLyte when I had my BMX I wasn't given anything to cover incisions and no compression bra nothing! Just some silky tape over the actual cuts. I was told leave the tape on till it fell off and no showers until all drains came out. I had 4 drains 2 removed after 1 week. The others after 3 weeks. Best shower I ever had. Was never told anything about edema. The nurses told me to exercise my arms to keep from getting frozen shoulder but not much as explanations on that. I saw my oncologist and she mentioned I had some minor arm swelling on one side and showed me a couple of exercises to do. I did them for a couple of weeks but when I saw her again at 3 month checkup she told me I should still be doing them because one side was getting a stiff shoulder. She told me to ask the PS to see if he could clip some of the scarring in that side during EX. He agreed but now I am restricted about lifting my arms over my head so don't know if it helped or not. I think I have swelling in my chest area in the evenings but it seems gone by morning. I don't know if the BMX causes it or if it's the anastrozole

Orca you sound surprised at the ease of the EX surgery. I was too and very pleased. Glad to hear you're doing well.

Nulyte: All surgeons are different for sure. When I had my right mx in January, my breast surgeon did not have me wear a surgical bra. I was allowed to shower, had to paint drain sites and cover with drain sponges daily. My incision was glued on the outside. Strict restrictions: No lifting more than 2 pounds, no moving arm more than 30 degrees. When I went for preop, I had a PT evaluation to get baseline measurements for lymphedema monitoring.

This surgery, the show is run by the plastic surgeon. Surgical bra still on all the time (grrr), no showering until 48 hours after all drains are out. Drains sites stay covered with biopatch and tegaderm. No lifting over 2 pounds and no arms above head.

After my surgery in January, I did request a script for a prosthetic, but had to wait for 6 weeks after surgery to use it. I also asked for PT because I had 31 nodes removed and had horrible range of motion and was terribly tight. As far as lymphedema, I would definitely ask if you are noticing any signs and symptoms.

P.S. Today is 48 hours from drain removal! I am super excited to take a shower! The first in 2 weeks!!!

Back in January, my surgeon did warn me about my urine turning blue from the dye, but he forgot to mention that I would have a urinary catheter... I found out when I told the nurse I had to pee! At my preop prior to this last surgery, he did inform me that I would have a catheter. I thanked him for telling me this time. His response was great: "I didn't tell you that last time?" Haha

Jenny, I also had my surgery (BMX) on 10/31 - how are you doing? I have some swelling under both arms, it feels like I have golf balls jammed in them. So that's restricting my range of motion on one side, but I'm getting close to full range.

Wicked - I also got my period the day after surgery. Like a cruel joke, 10 days early.

SeedSally - nice to hear that you like the results of your recon.

I am 18 days post-BMX and on Tuesday, I am allowed back in the pool (my surgeon said 2 weeks after drains were removed). So my goal is to have full range of motion by then, so I can get back to swimming...at least until my onc says I can't.

Had my surgery today. Lumpectomy right breast. They attempted to put a wire in to the titanium marker under ultrasound but couldn't locate it so they had to insert it using mammogram. It took two tries to insert it. โ˜น๏ธ๏ธ Then they took me to nuclear medicine to inject radioisotope into my breast so they could find my sentinel node during surgery. That was painful but only lasted a few seconds. Then they took me straight to holding to prepare me for surgery. They had to send the tissue to the breast ultrasound dept to check for the marker. They couldn't find it so they had to go back in and take some more tissue and send it to be checked. The sentinel node was clear. Home now and resting. Sore but no need for pain meds so far. Next hurdle is radiation

Barboyd - glad that in the end, they got what they needed! Wishing you luck with radiation! My sister was a radiation therapist for 10+ years and had said that most women get through radiation with few side effects.

As for me, ladies, these are much comfortable, but I had to do a fair amount of pocket work on the right side, and I am still draining a ton from that side.. Sigh..

I'm scheduled for a lumpectomy on the 30th - I had an u/s, mammo, stereotactics, MRI, u/s, more core biopsies - all benign but my BS still wants to remove my lump (Im assuming there is a tiny chance it still could be or develop into ca?). Hoping I won't be out of work too long, what was recovery like? my lump is in my lower inner quad mid depth to chest wall 3cm x 1.5cm. Did anyone have to take pain meds other than ibuprofen or tylenol?

am now 4 days post BMX with left ALND and doing better than I anticipated! Surgery took almost 6 hours Tuesday and I stayed one night in hospital. I have no post op bra per PS and one drain on each side. Took a shower yesterday for first time and made me feel sooooooo much better. The pain is definitely manageable ,the muscle relaxer is just as effective as Norco if not more. I only slept one night in recliner and have since been in bed on my wedge nest :)

    Best wishes to all :)

Brenda, so glad you are doing better than expected! That is very relieving, and I wish you continued healing.

I had a UMX and SNB 2 days ago, and the pain is also less intense than I was expecting. I am home now and sore, but it's tolerable. I was given a shot of morphine in the recovery room and then a Vicodin the first night, but after that the nurses didn't want to give me anything more than tylenol because my blood pressure was too low. I was okay with that, even though I always have low bp, and I wasn't dizzy. I started to develop a headache at the hospital yesterday morning, and since I've been home it's been terrible. A headache like none I've had before, and I'm sitting with a bucket in case I get sick (I'm nauseous too). I have taken Percocet since I've been home, and I wonder if it's from that? Has anyone had problems with headaches after surgery? It's almost worse pain than the mastectomy. And I don't get headaches usually. I can call my doc in the morning, but it's also Thanksgiving here, and I'm hesitant to call for a headache on a holiday. Hopefully it will go away soon, but I was wondering if anyone else had something similar happen...

Kat Yes, I believe pain meds give me headaches. It is the worst thing I remember about my first Csection. Last week I had a uni mx and had headache until the surgery meds wore off. I took only Tylenol after that and it got better. I, too, said it was worse than any pain from the surgery. Best wishes for soon relief.

    Hello Donna:

I am finished with all my treatments, and over a two year survivor. I met many who had only one breast removed during chemotherapy, and a few years down the road it spread into their other breast and other organs. Even though my cancer was in my right breast/and positive nodes.

I made the decision to have the double mastectomy without reconstruction. I did not want to worry about the cancer moving to my left breast. Of course, no guarantees!

I think if you have a peace in your heart that is what matters. No, it was not a easy decision. I laid on my bed the night before my surgery and cried/started grieving over my girlies.

Because of not liking to be cut on. I chose no reconstruction. I only get surgery when absolutely necessary. I did get my husbands input, and he was okay with my decision not to get reconstruction.

I also have many skin sensitivities since cancer treatments. I honestly don't know what other issues could come up. I am 57 now and not willing to take that risk.

Most people get reconstruction. I am from the old school of thought. If it is not necessary, I see no need to put myself through that stress. If I was younger, maybe I would feel different.

    Donna I hope this helps.

Icantri, thank you so much for your reply. I'm happy to say that my headache went way down in intensity yesterday, and today it is gone. No more percocet for me! I'm managing fine on just Tylenol. It is good to know how we react to medications, and this was my first time trying these types of pain meds. After my pregnancies I took ibuprofen (no c-sections), but here they say to stay away from NSAIDS due to bleeding. This was my first surgery, so I guess I'm getting life experience! I hope you're continuing to recover well from your uni mx.

Saw my surgeon for a post op visit. He hugged my neck and said he had an early Christmas present. Then he told me that all my biopsies were free from any signs of cancer. PTL!

I see my oncologist dec 2 and resume my herceptin. I am sure she will still recommend radiation.

I am just glad to have finished chemo and have surgery behind me

    Great news Barboyd!

I continue to truck along I had my 2nd expander fill on Wednesday. The first fill was 30 cc on each and the second fill was 40 cc each. Really tight and sore. More on the left side.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!

Surgery was on the 16th Dear God I wish I had never walked through those hospital doors!! My care was great, nurses so sweet but through no fault of their own they knew absolutely nothing about post BMX care. I am a nurse and no one ever taught me either, so I am not judging. I had to demonstrate how to strip and empty drains, no BP in my arms etc, etc,. The Residents did not know the answers to any of my ?'s and were basically assholes when I would tell them that my TE had slid up into my shoulder area. Which my BS said yes that did happen and it would slowly but surely lower itself (most likely). I am out of bed on day 9 otherwise I have been in a valium and oxy coma, and I have loved it hahahaha. I slid out of the leather recliner yesterday and due to my T-Rex arms I had to wait for the neighbor to come over and put me back in my chair. OMG and if he could smell me he would have dropped me out the window. Does anyone have the smell of the walking dead under their arms??

Love you all so much you have helped me keep it together!!

OG56 - I am so sorry you didn't get great care. I too was offended by my own smell. I used baby wipes on my armpits and that helped a lot, as did sitz baths and also getting my sister to was my hair (after week one was over). Hope you continue to heal and things go moe smoothky!

I'm feeling pretty good since my 10/31 BMX. I've been back in the pool swimming for a week (very slowly) and almost have full range of motion. I have a bit of swelling just to the front of each armpit that causes tightness when I straighten my arms above my head.

I got some devastating news on Wednesday at my onc appointment. The "team" feels it is best to go back in and remove the rest of my lymph nodes. I had 3 out of 4 that were positive, and my surgeon thought that was fine, but the rest of the team wants to take the rest after I do AC+T chemo. I'm horrified at the thought of living with lymphedema. I think I may refuse surgery and take my chances at living. I'm 41 and very active, I don't want to live deformed and in pain. It's bad enough having no breasts, I don't want a massive arm too.

    I start chemo on wednesday.

My surgery mastectomy of left side with no reconstruction was on the 9th. I reported to the hospital at 6 a.m. and was home before 1 p.m. Still surprised that there was not even one overnight on the hospital. Those who said the anxiety over the procedure was the worst part are right. The nurse had the doc prescribe a valium while awaiting the surgery because I apparently was a little stressed. However I am glad to report that my pain afterwards was low and I have only taken 2 Motrin since the surgery. The main incision area is fine but , ouch, that area under the arm is still sore. That fat pad is uncomfortable and I sure hope there are some good options to get rid of that later. Any ideas on how to make that area feel better?

I wanted to emotionally prepare myself to see the incision area but that didn't happen. As I changed clothes that evening there was my incision in all its glory. There wwas no bandage over the area as dermabond glue was used instead of stitches. The sight slapped me in the face but then I got over it quicker than perhaps waiting to see it.

The surgeon said all looked fine at my post op and the great news that the pathology report found no more cancer or precancer cells in the tissue, Yeah! My chemo was finished on Sept.20 so now it's all a matter of healing and getting my strength and endurance back again. I do need to work on the arm exercises to get my full range of motion back. I was afraid to start them as soon as the surgeon wanted me to because of the fear of lymphedema.

The oncologist was pleased with everything and I have a few months reprieve before seeing her again.

I tried wearing a bra that closes in the back but that felt awful after a few hours so back to my one front closure that us way too big.

Now I also sit and wait and wonder when I can tell my hair is growing back. I heard the recent reports that Taxotere causes a 9.2% permanent hair loss. Oncologist says she hasn't had anyone yet have that happen to them. I am hoping I won't be her first!

My best wishes to all who are still recovering. To those who are waiting still for the surgery, you can do it. You will be fine. Remember there are many who love you and it's not because of your body but because of who you are as a friend, wife, mom, sister, co-worker, etc.

I also agree that after treatments and procedures for MX seem so different. If I was not computer literate and willing to do some research I would have been unprepared for what I went through. I told my husband just yesterday that I almost feel like putting together an information sheet telling the MX patients things they might like to know like having button down shirts and that front closure bra or a post MX cami and where to get the specialty items. The hospital/nurses/doc told me that having something like drain pockets might be nice. But I did have a belt and pockets ordered. They had not arrived by date of my surgery so hubby slipped off his shirt and let me wear it home because it had a pocket I could place the drain in.

How long does it usually take to get post-mastectomy pathology back? Had my BMX on 11/15. The Thanksgiving holiday (I'm in the US) is probably making it all take longer.

    Hi

I just had a BMX on 11/25. It's been a rough few days. I start crying and cannot stop. Its harder because my husband is a truck driver and won't be back until Thurs. I have a PET Scan and follow up with BS on Friday. Im trying to stay positive but my emotions give out.
