I was diagnosed with DCIS in December 2007 and took Tamoxifen for four years and Arimidex for one year; I've been off both since 2012. Now that they have changed the recommended treatment from five years to ten, should be go back on it until the end of the ten year period, start again for another five, or do nothing?

Please tell when you were diagnosed, how many years you took/are taking the meds, if you were put back on it again when the changes were recommended, etc?

DIagnosed in 2012. At the time he said “5 years and we’ll talk”. I think part of that was that the 10 year recommendations were just starting to come out, and also that he was thinking I might go into menopause in that time so that might affect his recommendations as well.

It’s been 4 years, and I am nowhere near menopause (I was 45 at diagnosis, 49 now). We haven’t talked about it recently but I suspect I’ll stay on for an extra 5, which is fine with me.

It’s been 4 years without .... I’d be surprised if they put you back on at this point, honestly. Wouldn’t hurt to call your doc and discuss it though. I don’t know how old you are, but that would probably make a difference as to whether it makes sense or not, too.

I began Tamoxifen in February of this year and was told I'll be on it for 10 years.

I was diagnosed in August 2014. My doc told me that is be taking the anti hormonal for 10 years. I am on Tamoxifen now. In December doc is running some blood tests to determine if I am menopausal. I am also having a bone density test. If I am menopausal, doc will switch me to Arimidex. She says that Arimidex provides slightly better protection than Tamoxifen, but if I am not menopausal, my period could come back if I start taking it. If I am Cancer free for 10 years, then she says that she kicks me out of her practice. Here's hoping that that happens

Oops just realized this is the DCIS forum. Your circumstances would be very different than for someone like me with a gr3 stage 2 cancer. Not sure about pure DCIS and remaining on hormone therapy...
