Raven... My DH had to remove TWO of mine. One lost suction the first weekand and the other one lost it about 5 days later. The surgeon walked him through it over the phone. We cleaned everything with alcohol and snipped the stitching, then he pulled them out!

It wasn't terrible, just freaky to have my husband do it. It was after hours both times (around midnight) so I was happy to avoid the emergency room!

I didn't wanted to sit there begging for infection.

Hugs... I understand your stress today!

Raven - your drain tube snapped in half? I didn't know they could do that under normal usage. Good lord, talk about an infection risk. I guess you'll definitely have that one removed...here's hoping it's not needed or replaced!

The most recent nightmare pain was pretty quickly assessed by the PT yesterday and determined to be, in this case, a difficult-to-get-to muscle (under a bone) that was locked in a spasm and in the process pinching two nerves that ran through it. He worked on it, re-aggravated it to confirm, worked on it again, and I made him tell me the name three times so I'd remember this little demon's name. Spent last evening working on contortions over a small ball to be able to get to that spot myself, or close enough, and parked on a heating pad.

I'm super-stiff this morning but at least I could sleep last night. So today I am going to Do Stuff (aka sit at the computer and work on a project), and probably try to hit that muscle again later + heat. It's a hypersensitive area anyway, so I want to see what I can accomplish on my own.

    ____

My PS varies his antibiotic use by patient with exchange surgery. We all get dosed in the OR. After that I think he likes to play it safe and generally uses them but with my drug allergy/problems, he was thinking maybe only another 24 hrs of antibiotics at home, if that. It makes me nervous.

And as I recall, itchy is a pretty constant sign in my world that I'm healing. I just rub lightly around/nearby the area to not injure and then try to distract myself. I think itchy can be ok, but angry red or colored spots or streaks is what you need to watch for. Unless you're getting itchy hives, but let's hope not!

GreyKat, glad your PT could pinpoint the area at least. Here's hoping your "contortions" and heat do the trick to loosen up that spasm.

Just heard back from PS office. Not sure I'm happy about this but he wants to leave it in there, knotted off, until 4:00 p.m. tomorrow at which time he'll snip it off, see if there's any fluid backed up and, if not, just remove the damn thing. So I'm stuck with this "drain to nowhere" for 24+ more hours. I just keep wiping it down with alcohol swabs every time I go into the bathroom for anything. I guess it really isn't all that different from having the damn thing stuck in me with the bulb attached to the end of it but still.......history of infection! Freaked out!

    ~ more sigh ~

GreyKat - I'm so glad you were able to sleep last night.

My son who studies kinesiology had me rolling a small rubber ball (I think it was a field hockey ball) across certain muscles on my back to loosen them up before my MX in January. I leaned against a wall with the ball in between and rolled it across certain muscles. I think it really helped prevent shoulder pain after the MX, kind of like a deep tissue massage, and I still use it on occasion when my muscles feel tight. (Note that I don't advise anyone to do this without professional guidance!)

Raven - I'm a bit of a germ-a-phobe myself, so would really hate to be in your position! Maybe you could wrap the end in sterile gauze and stick it down with tagaderm until Thurs?

Tsoebinn - really good to hear from you! Hope you are well.

MyToyStory - the party sounds like fun! I miss those days...We had a total of 3 trick-or-treaters last night. When we moved into this small neighborhood in 1990, all of our neighbors had kids in elementary school. We would go through 5 or 6 bags of candy on Halloween. Now we are the only ones on our road who still give out candy, so it's not worth it for kids to come out to our house.

Hey Raven! I ended up with new drains too. Had my exchange on Friday. Follow up appointment was this morning and the drains will stay another week. Did the tubing rip in half or it just pulled out of the bulb? That is insane.

Grandma3X I had the exact same situation. My right side never looked as expanded as the left and yet they insisted the same amount of saline went into both. So during the exchange on Friday wouldn't you know it they had to recreate the pocket on the right side essentially. Lots of "pulling and tugging" they said, plus fat was cut along the outer sides to improve the contours which we talked about before the surgery. My right side is more swollen than the left. They also removed my chemo port from the right which made the pocket a little different than the left.

I felt pretty beat up and worked over all weekend but the pain is manageable today. I was offered a night in the hospital but opted to come home same day. On a week's worth of antibiotics.

The new implants do look pretty good so hopefully this bs was worth it and I continue to heal appropriately.

Greykat I've been away from the boards forever. I'm so sorry you are wrestling with side effects from May's surgery!

    Hugs to all of you!!!!

tsoebbin, my DH would absolutely faint dead away if the PS asked him to remove that tube! He gets light-headed even if I start describing anything to him. I can't even imagine! I do have friends who are RNs whom I'm sure would be more than happy to help, but I guess the PS's thought process is that any drain - even a knotted, unattached one, is better than no drain.

Grandma, I knotted the end and figured out a way to pin it to my clothes so it's not just dangling there, but the sterile gauze and tape sounds like a good idea. I still have a tube stuck in me that germs can climb up, but I guess I'd have that anyhow. Thanks for the idea!

Angtee15, good to hear from you! Sorry you're stuck with drains again but I'm glad your recovering well from the exchange and that they seem to look OK for you. And, yes, my tube really did snap in half - it didn't just come away from the bulb. I know. The PS's office couldn't believe it either.

I lurk everyday but still having issues with my hands from cording/lymphedema so I only chime in when I think I think I should!I have to type all day so texting or replies to message boards is limited!

Wanted Raven to know she's not alone in the failing to drain department!

Hi tseobbin! Hi Angtee! Happy exchange!

I am so sore and so stiff I'm having trouble standing up - it's comical. Half of that is good muscle pain from working atrophied muscles that are otherwise fine. The other half is bad screwed up muscle & nerve pain. Round and round we go...my hot water & electric bills this month are going to be outrageous.

Hi tsoebbin and Angtee - Glad you checked in! (Any other former May ladies out there lurking? We'd love an update!) Drain issues seem to be a common bond today! (I was the nearly 11-week drain lady....sooo glad I didn't come out of exchange surgery with them - and sooo sorry to those who are dealing with them again!)

PS was beyond thrilled with my exchange results at my appt today. He couldn't wait to take a peek, and it was fun to witness his honest reaction to his work. He was both relieved and a little giddy about how well rightie turned out. He's not one to get personal with his patients, so it was actually quite touching to DH and I - made us realize how much extra effort (and technique) he must have needed to make rightie's implant a viable option during surgery. He's already plotting future revisions on leftie to match rightie better - never thought we'd say that! But to be clear, we're not talking showstopper breasts here, we're just talking about taking a horrible situation and turning it into something tolerable. I feel like we're finally on track to accomplish that.

    Have a great night all!

ToyStory, glad to see you and your surgeon are happy with the results. Cross my fingers for your healing to continue to be drama free.

My exchange will take place sometime into the New Year. The PS already said there will be no drains. How could he already know it, I wonder?

Tsoebbin, nice to hear from you and sending you big hugs. From experience, cording is no fun..

Wish everyone good healing with no surprises

Midwest - most PS don't use drains at exchange. Some use them if they are using anatomicals, other don't. The exception may be if you have previously had a seroma, or excessive drainage after MX/BMX.

myToyStory2, that's an awesome story about how excited your PS was about your outcome. I really do believe that these surgeons want the best possible outcome for all of us. And, as you say, that may not boil down to "show-stoppers" but just having anything that makes me not look mutilated at this point would be a dream come true.

Midwest, good to hear from you! Best wishes for your exchange into the New Year. Do be sure to stop in to let us know how it goes!

I went to see the PS yesterday about my busted drain. Basically all he did was snip off the busted end of the drain hose and re-attached it to the bulb. For God's sake....I could have done that! But I didn't want to - you guessed it! - risk infection, so I didn't do it myself. ~~sigh~~ At any rate, even though there isn't much draining he left it in there anyhow and will take it out on Monday. I guess it's better to have it and not need it rather than to need it and not have it - the fluid build-up is the lesser of those two evils, for sure. He did cover it with a Tegaderm waterproof dressing so that I can shower, but I probably will stick with sponge baths until this thing is out of me. He did put in a really thin drain tube this time around - it's those thick ones you get post-mastectomy that hurt like a mother, so at least it's not uncomfortable this time; just annoying.

I also finally remembered to mention to him how mad I was that no one told me to expect all the drainage from the cannula site after the procedure and that the hospital didn't provide me with any absorbent pads for the ride home, and he said that was all his fault. First, someone from his office should have told me what to expect and, secondly, his post-op orders were for fat grafting and did not specifically say "liposuction" so the nurses at the hospital wouldn't have known to give me different instructions. I'm sorry, but that's kind of a crock. I mean, it's nice of him to want to take all the blame himself but I would hope that when a nurse sees "fat grafting" they would be able to make the mental leap and add 2 + 2 to figure out that the graft had to COME from someplace and would then make the connection that they should provide lipo post-op instructions/materials as well. I don't know - at this point my expectations are already pretty low when it comes to medical care but I guess I need to set them even lower at this point. There's a cheery thought.

They decided to wait 2 weeks. The spot is right at the edge of the implant and they were afraid of rupturing it. If the lesion is still there in 2 weeks they will go ahead. They saw some hypervascilarity though so I'mpretty sure it's cancerous.

grandma - sorry this is happening, I know it is nerve wracking. Hoping this is not a return of cancer - I had bi-lat light up on a PET a week prior to my last surgery in May, with a 3cm nodule right at the site of my cancer 5 years earlier. It turned out to be a ball of suture granuloma, and it was removed during the swap of that implant. My MO and PS were both very concerned that this was a recurrence, as I had three previous PET scans over the previous several years that showed nothing, so anything is possible. Since you had a large tumor and a relatively small breast (correct?) were they able to get a decent margin at the time of your MX?

    Thanks everyone.
SpecialK- I had a 2mm border on the anterior and 5 mm on the posterior side of the tumor. This new lesion is several cm away, in the upper inner quadrant, while the tumor was in the upper outer quadrant.

My BS was in surgery all day but just emailed to say that she will have a look at the US images and let me know her recommendation.
