Just had bilateral mastectomy waiting on pathology reports

I had a lumpectomy back in august to remove a lump that was biopsied many years ago and was expected to be nothing. Unfortunately the lump removed had DCIS extensively throughout it with 3 foci of micro invasion. Due to me being 39 and my mom also having breast cancer (over 20 yrs survivor..yay!!!), I decided to do a nipple sparing bilateral mastectomy on Oct 21, 2016 (last Friday) at UTSW in Dallas. I also had a SNB and my nodes tested negative for cancer. Right now they are only recommending me to take tamoxifen, which I'm not sure if I'll take yet. My worry now is that the pathology report will show negative margins (cancer close to my skin) and other more invasive cancer in the tissue that was removed. Has this ever happened to anyone and if so what was your course of treatment. I did have an MRI after my initial lumpectomy that didn't show any additional cancer, but neither did my mammograms, so I'm not sure how much faith ican put in those reports

Sorry for the long post. Thank you in advance for sharing your experience with me

I know how hard it is to wait. I think you should feel good about MRI results. It is much more accurate then mammograms. Especially if you have dense breasts. Good luck and keep us posted...

Well, I got some great news, there was no other invasive cancer found in my BMX breast tissue (both the non cancer and cancer breast). They did find clusters of DCIS throughout the cancer breast tissue. Which makes me feel validated in my decision to get the mastectomy. The margins were also 2mm in some cases and 5+ in others. I was so relieved to hear the news, that I couldn't contain my emotions!! This has been pretty emotional for me as I'm sure it has been for everyone else going through this.

    Thanks,
