Has anyone been on Arimidex without side effects? Has anyone with early stage disease opted out of AIs?

I have been on Arimidex for about a month. SE's haven't been too bad...a little joint pain the morning, but it lessens as the day goes on. I'm finding it much more manageable than Tamoxifen.

As to opting out with early stage disease, I'd recommend trying the AI's and seeing how you tolerate them. You can always stop if you are struggling with the SEs.

I thought I was on it without SEs but developed some at the 6 month point...

Thank you, Ladies, for the posts. I just started the AIs yesterday. So I will wait and see how tolerable they are for me. I have a big question about vaginal estrogens. My gyn says ok, but my MO says no. Any experience with this?

I haven't used vaginal cream w estrogen yet but my oncologist told me it would be fine to use it if needed.
    I am using lubricants.
Maybe there are different vaginal creams and some are more acceptable in our case than the others?

Hi Dennyse, I made it through AIs just fine. I think your larger question is about your "womanhood". I got through the whole experience with no real problems in that area. I just used OTC lubricants. This included time with a lovely guy who alas is no longer with us, and then a much younger guy I dated a couple of years ago. I got rave reviews from both.

My problem now is being super busy with my career and no one in my life.

One thing that really helps with the trip through AIs is lots of exercise. It also helps with the above activity both from how you feel about your body and of course, a lot of things are simply more fun if you're fit.

Good luck. And remember that "practice makes perfect"! - Claire

I am also one with stage one who opted out of anti hormone therapy. I hope you do well on it. Just keep in mind that joint issues can be permanent. Not trying to persuade you or scare you. Just think we should have all the facts and make informed decisions. Good luck and keep us posted..

Hi every8thwoman, your diagnosis was nine years ago, stage 1 and grade 1. Do you mind my asking why you still have to take hormonal therapy?

I had minor side effects but after four years my hands ache and I have trigger finger. I stopped the AI and hope this horribly painful and debilitating side effect gets better.

If I had to do it over again, I'd opt out. I did it because my oncatype was 31 and my husband really wanted me to.
