Hello! I received the dreaded letter from my yearly mammogram last Monday that they needed more films. I had a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound on my left breast for an area of focal asymmetry that was more conspicuous than on previous films. Ultimately, the US technician talked to me after the doctor reviewed my results, and said that the area was an island of dense tissue with no tumor calcifications, cystic or solid lesions. I was having such a panic attack in the room that she pulled up my screening mammo, my diagnostic mammo, and then the US to show me the pictures. She said the radiologist just wanted to check it again in 6 months to make sure it remained stable, but that there was no need to biopsy anything because there was nothing to biopsy. She kept telling me, "See this, it's just denser tissue." But, I am still so nervous about having the 6-month followup. Can anyone shed anything on this to help me?

Hi. I had my mammo and US last week of sept. They found a 7mm focal asymmetry from mammo but nothing from US. Because of my family history, my doc advised MRI. So my MRI is next week. I dont have any previous mammo films or US results to compare it with so there's no way my doc would know if it has been there before. Technically a focal symmetry means there is an area in your one breast that is not in the other breast. It can be a normal or denser tissue, it can be a scar. Most focal asymmetries are benign. It is just monitored every six months to make sure it doesnt change size or characteristics. Asymmetries can be an uncommon sign of BC but dont fret, per studies the possibility is just 1-2%. The odds are on are side. Just go to follow ups diligently.
