Is it normal to have a MRI before a lumpectomy ? Is a MRI the next step after you have been diagnosed by 3D and biopsy but before any kind of surgery is scheduled?

I had an MRI after my biopsy which discovered another "area of question" that didn't appear on my of the other mammograms and or ultrasounds. Still waiting to find out what exactly it is, but if it turns out to be a second location if DCIS, then that changes the type of surgery I will probably opt for.

I think it depends on your provider. Some automatically do MRI as a next step to make sure there isn’t anything hiding. Mine doesn’t. I don’t have particularly dense breasts so mine may have been easy enough to read on mammogram that they felt it wasn’t necessary but I know it wasn’t offered to me. I didn’t have any ultrasounds, either.

I do have friends who says it is standard practice where they go that everyone be given one, so I think it varies.

I had an MRI after the initial 3D "discovery" and stereo-biopsy where markers were placed.

The MRI was ordered by my BS (whereas the biopsy was the standard protocol next step of the Imaging Center...something I now question after how difficult a procedure it was for me).

The BS wanted the MRI to provide him with more views on how to proceed with the lumpectomy. I had DCIS in two spots 3 and 6 o'clock so looking to either have two discrete LX's or one larger.

A 3D found the calcifications. A Biopsy determined the DCIS. Will meet with BS/surgical oncologist Wed.3D and U/s were done on both breast initially. Would a MRI still be needed? Going to Mayo. Dense breasts but was able to calcifications easily on 3D.

    Thank you for the replies.

I had an MRI after the diagnosis (based on excisional biopsy) to determine if there were other areas of concern in either breast. If you are being treated at Mayo, they know what they are doing.

Although an MRI biopsy was recommended for the non-diagnosed breast by the original treating facility (often false positive readings occur), when I transferred care to Memorial Sloan Kettering, they felt the biopsy was not necessary and they just did MRI follow-ups for either six months or a year (can't recall now). No subsequent issues developed.

So they did schedule me today to have one Wed. before I meet the surgeon. Would he get the results by then? I am glad.
