HI. My name is Wendi. I am 42. I was Diagnosed yesterday by the Mayo Clinic with DCIS. They told me that is was considered a pre-cancer. I am curious is the MO/BS will think the same when I meet him on Wed. I really like the nurses here. Having everyone in one place is nice.

My hope is to get the all the info I need to make the best choice. Right now, I am leaning to Lumpectomy and hoping I can do IORT. IF the MRI finds other things or the surgeon can't get the good margin then I am open to a Mastectomy.

MY DX right now is DCIS intermediate grade. ER 90% Pr 10%. No invasive seen.9mm..

My questions are:

1) How long was it from deciding your plan to surgery? How long between surgery and rads?

2)How long was recovery from your surgery?

    Hi Wendi -

Welcome to the club no one wants to join!

For me, it was about 3 weeks between deciding what to do and surgery, which was partially because I wanted to finish out the semester (I teach in a graduate program) before surgery. I had the surgery early December, and started rads about 6 weeks later at the end of January/beginning of February. I think that gap is fairly standard as they want things to heal a bit first.

Recovery was quick. I had a bad reaction to the pain killers they gave me right after, so I felt really crappy for about 24 hours. The breast incision was nothing - didn’t really bother me at all after a day or two. The incision from where they took the lymph nodes (I had a known micro-invasion going into surgery) was more painful, but I was still completely functional after a week.

    Thank you.

I am trying to play this all around the holidays, but with as little disruption to my 6 year old as possible. My hubby has taken some time off so he can help. I don't work except for volunteer so a lot my schedule can be open.

I am hoping that most of my appts. can be done while she is at school and unaware except mommy has an ouchie boob. I am thankful that I am going to Mayo and everything is in house so to speak.

I am also hoping I might be able to be a candidate for IORT or the one week radiation.
