Hello-my mother has had a Mamogram, Ultrasound, CT Scan, and Breast biopsies. The surgeon ordered Breast MRI. She can't do it due to a metal plate in her back. Should we ask or seek a PET scan? Other testing advice?

I would say yes, a pet scan. The PET shows all.. Good luck!

Hi! More information. Biopsy showed one lymph node involved on the left breast and that there is a 1.5 cm mass "deep" in the breast near the chest wall. Mom has metal plate in back so cannot do Breast MRI. That's why I thought PET scan. Surgeon said could do MBI (Molecular Breast Image). But the Surgeon and Oncologist felt there would be very little to gain from that test. They suggested doing a CT with and w/o contrast, and Nuclear Bone Scan to see if there is any chest wall involvement. Not hopeful for more information on chest wall involvement, through these two tests however.

Is she ER+? What is the oncologist's plan at this point? I always ask whether new information a test might provide would change anything in the treatment plan. In other words, ask the docs and yourself how you could use that additional information. If you cannot use it consider not doing the test.

I have an 89 year old father with prostate cancer and several other serious conditions. We are not doing much more on prostate cancer side in terms of testing because we know any cancer treatment would be detrimental to his QOL or whatever is left of it.
