Newly diagnosed. So much to consider.

Hi everyone. I'm newly diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. We've been watching the lump for a while. Had an ultrasound June 2015. Told ok. Ultrasound and mammogram September 2016. Biopsy 10/3/16 of lump and lymph node. Both positive. Invasive ductile and lobular carcinoma. Grade 2. ER+ 95% and PR+ 70%. HER2 1+ so negative. Ki-67 15-20%. I'm 39 mother of 2 boys 9 and 6.

My mother had breast cancer at 57 so we're doing a genetic test to see. My mother didn't have a test done. She's 5 years cancer free this year. Same diagnosis. Same breast!

I quit smoking this week. I'm also scheduled for a breast MRI. I have small breasts so talk so far has been about mastectomy. But we're considering neoadjuvent chemo before surgery, for lymph nodes. Really like the MO, like the BS, but everyone is putting in their 2 cents about where to go

Any thoughts would be appreciated. So much to think about. Not afraid of surgery or treatment, afraid of being sick and tired. Love to exercise, sad about lifestyle changes or not being able to care for my boys.

    Hi Grannemama!

I did neoadjuvant chemo, and it wiped out the active cancer in my breast and lymph node. But, my lump was 5 cm., and my cancer was really aggressive (triple positive). My boob is/was C-cup, so I was able to avoid a mastectomy and had a lumpectomy. That possibility does seem likely in your case, but neoadjuvant chemo does show whether or not chemo works. For example, my doctors were able to compare my MRI and PET scans from "before chemo" to the MRI and PET scans from "after chemo," and they clearly revealed that the active cancer was gone.

Hope you get your genetic test back soon! I tested negative for BRCA 1 and 2, but if I had tested positive, I probably would have opted for a bilateral mastectomy and oopherectomy.

Good luck with the smoking! I've cut my alcohol intake by two thirds, but I'm still working on quitting all together.

    ((Hugs))

Hi, Newly diagnosed - last week. No information of any use to hand. Biopsy confirmed 99% certain diagnosis from mammogram and ultrasound. Without thinking quickly enough I agreed to biopsy before they checked the bookings for consultation with surgeon. So biopsy has 'woken' the monster as it were, but Thursday appointment requested stretched to Tuesday (tomorrow) to meet surgeon. Why don't they think before they open their mouths? Radiologist said he would call but then "if I don't call you call me..." Seriously?? When I am over this I will give them some handy hints, but having said that, they are very kind and I feel in good hands. Big day tomorrow I think. Spending most of the morning on a 'make over' treat so I will rock up to appointment looking the best ever. I feel like I need a 'before' image, and it will give me something to aim for 'after'. Adult sons proof that no-one listens after the "I've got cancer" words. One rang at 2:00am to wish me well for surgery not yet even scheduled. I said I would take the love he sent and please send more next week. Partner - kind of downplaying this. Difference of approach - I want information and to mull over the 'what if's' he thinks it is just a lump will be removed and on we go. I hope he is right. May find out tomorrow. Thanks for the website. When I tell the clinic how to improve their client interaction I will suggest a sheet of helpful websites. Breastcancer.org might be at the top!

There's an ILC forum here that I recommend you to read when you get a chance. Lobular is so different and sneaky that the current recommendation is to get a mastectomy right off the back. It's hard to find on mammograms, US, and MRI's even, so they're moving away from recommending lumpectomies until the patient really understands how Lobular cancer works.
