Coming up on ten years of Arimidex

I've been reading some of the posts about extending AI use longer than ten years. A few years ago my oncologists said she would be happy if I stayed on it for the rest of my life. She said of course it's up to me. I was all set to say ten years is long enough but now that it's here I'm second guessing my decision.

I've had terrible hot flashes and joint pain the entire time. I was diagnosed at 40 and I'm now 50.

Are there any studies that show the risks/benefits of lifetime AI use?

Thank you. To answer your question there have been so many biopsies since my diagnosis in 2006 that I just said enough is enough. Plus they never did get good enough margins after two lumpectomies so I was always worried.

I'm glad I had it done

Hi there and congratulations! I switched from Tamoxifen to Femara after 5 1/2 years this past May. I had my first bone scan (since I just turned 50 and chemo put me in menopause at 43) and I have osteopenia in my lumbar spine. Have you had a bone density test? How I am able to manage the bone loss is going to determine how long I stay on this drug.

I'm not yet through active treatment but my MO told me to stay on AI for the rest of my life. (Although my stats are different from yours.) That's my intention.
