I have just had my second AC treatment yesterday but, last week on my week off I have developed some awful mouth sores. It's gotten worse. I have been doing everything under the sun. Salt water with baking soda like every 5 mins is the. Only thing that soothes it for about 5 mins. So far lost 5 lbs bc I'm drinking all my meals through a straw and starving. My MO ordered gelclair and acyclovir. They only had one dose of gelclair at the phrmcy so they had to order it for tommorow. It's so expensive and my insurance doesn't cover it. So glad my husband who Has been active duty for 15 years and on numerous deployments gets awesome Tricare insurance'!!! Joke! It could worse I could have no insurance. I'm not trying o be ugly just in so much pain. Does anyone out there have any Gelclair they re willing to part with, I will py for shipping!!! Any advice would be great! Thank you everyone.

    Hi!

Did they have you suck on ice chips during the administration of the adriamycin? That's supposed to reduce the chances of getting mouth sores. Good luck, getting your meds!

    hi blessed2016,

My doctor prescribed something called "mucosis mouthwash" and it was only $22. It is made at the pharmacy and consists of 1/3 nystatin, 1/3 lidocaine viscous 2%, and 1/3 distilled water. So far no mouth sores. I don't know if it would effectively treat the mouth sores you already have; it might be good for prevention only--I don't know. So sorry to hear that you have this terrible side effect from chemo. Can you call the insurance company and find if there is an alternate, comparable drug they do cover? It seems crazy that you are insured, suffering, and they won't pay for the medicine that you need. (I am from Canada and don't know how American health insurance works, so apologies for my ignorance). Hope this heals quickly.

    stephincanada,

Thank you so much for your advice. I know Nystatin is for yeast or candidiasis in the mouth and I've read somewhere that someone used it as well. They had some sores but not as many as I do but, I'll have my MO get a RX to the pharmacy today because it may help. I tried the gelclair yesterday(the one dose that my pharmacy had in stock) and today it feels like it's helping. Unfortunately the pharmacy didn't order the rest of my script yesterday like they said they would so instead of it being here today, it's going to be tomorow. That's so frustrating to me because I was at the pharmacy yesterday for 45 mins waiting for them to fill my acyclovir and the one packet of gelclair! Which by the way was called in by my MO two hours before! I just don't understand some peoples work ethic. I'm a nurse and if my patient needed something especially for pain they got it right away as long as it was due. I didn't forget about it! Ok rant over. I called my insurance company and they looked up comp meds, and well none of those were covered either. I know if it's not FDA Approved they won't pay. I don't think gelclair is but have to go back on the site. I hope this clears up, I'm so hungry.
