This is a yummy and healthy recipe.

4 cups broccoli florets
1/2 cup golden raisins
1/4 cup green onions
1/2 cup sour cream
1/2 cup mayonnaise
4 - 6 slices bacon, crumbled
1 tablespoon sugar

Mix sour cream and mayonnaise (I use light) and sugar in large bowl. Mix broccoli (I cut the florets into smaller pieces), raisins and onions - toss with sour cream mixture. Refrigerate overnight. Top with bacon (or bacon bits) before serving.

Oh Shirley, when I saw 'broccoli salad,' I immediately thought of the one Harris Teeter makes....have you tried that? I'm addicted to that stuff and have it at least weekly, with fish or a veggie burger. Yours sounds even better though!

This was always a hit at our family gatherings during the holidays. You can omit the bacon bits if you don't eat meat. There are also the imitation bits. This is very, very good.

    Hi Shirley,

That broccoli salad is terrific. I use dried cherries instead of raisins and add cashews. Toasted almonds would be even healthier. Thought about canadian bacon or turkey pastrami.
Still some nitrates, but less "bad " fat.

I make something very similar and use diced dried apricots ans Splenda instead of sugar. I add a bit of bacon grease for extra flavor-my mom used to do that with her cole slaw, and it really adds a depth of flavor (I melt it in the microwave first). YUM!!!

Aw, your ideas sound great. I may have to try the dried cherries. The bacon is good in it, but I could do without it. Is the imitation bacon bad for us? Probably since it imitation. Did I just answer my own question?

Shel, I think you'll like it. It is better made the night before because the flavors set in.

    Enjoy!

This is the recipe I use when I make broccoli salad (can't say it's healty or low cal but it's yummy), my niece gave me the recipe.

    4-5 cups broccoli flowerettes
    1/2 red onion, sliced
1/2 cup cheddar cheese (I use extra sharp), grated or cubed
1/2 lb. bacon, fried and chopped

Combine all ingredients except dressing. For dressing, combine 1 cup Miracle Whip (you can substitute regular mayonnaise) , 2 Tblsp vinegar, and 6 Tblsp sugar. Mix well, pour over salad ingredients. Mix, chill and serve.

kats, this one sounds good too. I may just have to try it. Can't we be a little bad once in a while? I'm bad too often!

Yah! I've always wondered how to make this, not much of a cook. I really didn't expect this recipe when I checked the thread, but I'm sure glad I did. It's great, and now I know how to make it. Actually, there are certain resturants that make it "just right" and I go to them just for this salad. Thanks a bunch!
