Recently diagnosed
Learning new things daily since being diagnosed on sept 12 2016. Report says well differentiated invasive ductal carcinoma and foci of low grade ductal carcinoma in situ. Solid and cribriform types. So what does this mean? Mass is very small- 1 cm. Historical grade is 1, nuclear is 2, mitotic is 1, Richardson score is 4.
Lumpectomy is 9/29/16 and my oncology appt is 10/14/16.

Sounds like a very favorable profile—especially tiny size and histological grade 1. Did they tell you the hormone-receptor and HER2 status? Only surgery can confirm size, node involvement (if any) and % of hormone receptors and degree of HER2 expression. “Cribiform” means the DCIS resembles Swiss cheese. The IDC may have started as DCIS, with some of the latter’s cells mutating into having the capability to escape the duct into the breast tissue (hence “invasive ductal”). If you have both DCIS and IDC in the same tumor or even the same breast, your stage and treatment will be driven by the more advanced component: so despite having both types you would be treated as an IDC patient. But (for now, pending surgical pathology) a very early-stage (IA) one.

thank you -I was told I would know more after surgery.
My husband thinks it's stage 0- but I think it's 1... Regardless it's scar

DCIS is Stage 0. But if you have any IDC, then the IDC's stage is considered your actual stage, regardless of whether you also have DCIS.

Hi snowflake. I found this downloadable booklet from this site so valuable to explain my pathology report before I was able to see the doctor to do so:

Also the important links from the moderators for the newly diagnosed were great too.
I'm not far from where you are right now Dx of IDC on 8/26. Lumpectomy scheduled for 10/4. Hugs and prayers for you sister.

it's October 4-thinking of you . My lumpectomy was 9/29

My diagnosis is basically identical to yours, right down to the grade breakdowns. I had IDC and DCIS, both solid and cribform, although my DCIS was intermediate grade. Anyway, it's the IDC that drives treatment and staging--barring any surprises at surgery, you are Stage 1.

What did you do for treatment ?

I had a double mastectomy, but was given the choice of lumpectomy. I chose the more radical option because I had extremely dense breasts which made imaging very hard...in fact, on my post-diagnosis MRI they found multiple suspicious spots in both breasts that would have to be biopsied if I chose lumpectomy. After surgery, they did the oncotype test to see if I needed chemo, which I didn't. I am highly ER and PR positive, so I am on tamoxifen and have chosen to do ovarian suppression shots because I am only 39.

wow-I had an MRI /biopsy and that came out okay. Dense but no concerns. Otherwise I would have had the mastectomy.
