2cm lymph node in left breast
Hi ladies. I'm new here. I was referred to a surgeon today because of a painful swollen lymph node at the 4 o'clock position of my left breast. It is over 2 cm. After doing an ultrasound the surgeon said it was abnormal to have a node in that location that large and scheduled me to come in tomorrow to remove tissue to be biopsied. I asked her if it could be an infection and she said no.
She said she wasn't trying to scare me but she was looking for 2 things. Lymphoma and/ or cancer.
She didn't reassure me that this was probably nothing,
Do you think she could tell by just the ultrasound it was a cancer??
I'm just in shock.

I don't know if this helps or not, but there are no lymph nodes in your breast. They are in your armpit area ( or neck, etc.)

Jiffrig is right. There are no lymph nodes in the breast but there are various around it, (in the middle of thorax, around clavicle and under the armpit. Maybe she was referring to the ones near the armpit. Surgeons have experience with nodes and she may be right. Any news about cancer is like a hit in the face. I know that you are scared. So, please, take several deep breaths and try to think with a clear head. And don't forget that you can have a group who has gone thru what you might be experiencing today. Take care and write to us in this page if you feel upset.

As you know Kimigeneric, there certainly can be intramammary lymph nodes. They can be benign (non-cancerous) or cancerous. If there's any suspicion, I believe the only way to know for sure is to biopsy them. Hope you have a good result. Hang in there!

So sorry for your recent appointment - sounds like the radiologist has some concerns, and the waiting for answers is the hardest time. I hope you're able to see your surgeon soon and get the answers you need. While it's not possible to diagnose cancer from an US, it is possible to determine certain characteristics that are indicative of cancer. Did your radiologist give you a BiRADS score for your US?
I found a lump at the 10:30 position of my left breast a few years ago and the radiologist diagnosed it as an "inflammed inframammary lymph node". Until that time, I didn't realize there is a chain of lymph nodes that runs through the breast. Ultimately, though, that lump turned out not to be a lymph node - but I learned something new that day.

Yes, there are inframammary lymph nodes. I had a biopsy to rule out complex cyst v. benign inframammary lymph node

I had the lymph node biopsied today. She sent off two vials. One to test for lymphoma, and the other for cancer. The results should be available Friday.
She said everyone has intramammory lymph nodes, but typically not seen where mine is.
So, I will just wait and see.
Thank you for your stories. It does help.
I know it will most likely be benign. I have such a different respect for you ladies who are going through this. I guess it's something you don't really think about til it's in your face.
If anyone else has had issues like mine, please post!!
I will post my results either way.

Kimigeneric = so hoping you get good news today! I do have a similar story, but I think its best i share it with you after you have been told the resulths of the biopsies, wishing you the best! the waiting is truly one of the hardest part of this ....

Kimi, I assume you didn't get the results by Friday as you thought - thanks for posting this thread and I had no idea there were lymph nodes in the breast either and/or where they are "typically" located. So much to learn in such a short time and you are right, the respect one gains for those who have been fighting the fight for much longer and more serious diagnosis speaks volumes to the time they offer to newbies. Not an easy job I am sure.
Wishing you all the best with your results and interested to hear what there is no despair has to add!
