DIEP Flap reconstruction with Kaiser

Hi,

I was diagnosed with BC Stage 1 in March and had a double mastectomy April 25th. I've chosen to do a DIEP Flap reconstruction. I've meet with a plastic surgeon at Kaiser, but she told me they would still have to cut my stomach muscle to reach the blood vessels. This doesn't make sense to me. After doing some research most places I've found say that cutting the muscle shouldn't be necessary. Anyone have any experience with this? With Kaiser? Any recommendations for a surgeon at Kaiser? I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Thanks

    Hi TurtleSue-

Did your surgeon say why she would have to cut into the stomach muscle? Or is that the standard at the hospital you'll be using? We have a forum where members share their resources, including doctors and medical centers, so you might want to read through there and post if you don't find what you're looking for! You can find it here: https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/26.

    Hope this helps!

I'm very happy with my PS, Ben Hornik. He's at the Oakland Breast Care Center. I didn't have DIEP, but I know he does them because he really wanted to do DIEP rather than implant reconstruction because of my radiation treatment. I had my mastectomy at the new Oakland hospital, it's really nice

I didn't have DIEP, but I think my PS at Kaiser SF, Ali Salim, does the procedure. I really like him. Definitely ask for a second opinion (free within Kaiser) if you don't like the answers you've received. Good luck
