Diagnosed with second breast cancer - opposite breast (14 yr survivor) - and waiting on genetic testing results, I am struggling with the decision of reconstruction or prosthesis. First surgery, 14 yrs ago, was a lumpectomy of which I have worn a prostheses. Married for 43 years to my best friend, his input is that he wants it to be my decision and he has no preference...just wants me to be healthy and happy. So my questions are: surgery recovery, pain, discomfort, natural appearance, pros and cons of prosthesis vs reconstruction. My surgeon has recommended the flap procedure.

I did DIEP flap on 3/1/16, and I am very pleased with the results.

I was flat for a while and determined I did not like it. I went forward with the DIEP surgery and I'm very happy with my results. I found the Prosthetics to be heavy and actually cause pain on my flat chest. I am aware that there are lighter ones that you can wear, however, they were not suitable for swimming with my children. DIEP reconstruction can be one to many procedures depending on the cosmetic results that you desire. Something to keep in mind. any questions PM me!
