Anyone quit tamoxifen and not tell anyone
I haven't taken my tamoxifen for the last three days. I'm sick of the weight gain. I know people will say it doesn't cause weight gain. I think it does. I'm probably being stupid, but I don't want to weigh 400 lbs when this is all said and done.
I will probably start it again. I just don't want to, but I don't want to be dumb about this either. Just venting - thanks for listening.

Oh, Nancy. How much weight have you gained? I'm about 10 pounds heavier than when I finished radiation. I weighed less this summer when I was swimming daily, but now that I'm back at work....I'm back to 155 lbs., which I hate. Still, I take my meds......
Aren't you post-menopausal? Could you ask your MO about AIs? I'm on Aromasin. It hasn't been a picnic, but I haven't gained THAT much weight.
Hoping you're doing OK otherwise!

Seriously thinking about it! I couldn't figure out why my hands are so stiff and my knees are so sore this time around on Tamoxifen. Then a light bulb went on, turns out that those are also menopausal symptoms.
I think taking a break helps you discover what is and isn't a side effect. Since I have started Tamoxifen four times in three and a half years, I know side effects like Achilles' tendon issues take a while to resolve. Thus I am loath to quit and restart.
Feel better!
Vent away Nancy!

Nancy so sorry you are going through this. Yes, anti hormone treatments do make it more difficult to lose weight in general. Some lose, but that's much less common. The SEs will mimic menopausal symptoms. Difficultly in losing weight is one of them. Talk to your doc. Hopefully he/she will work with you so you can continue some form of treatment.I think its sad that you feel you have to keep it a secret. IMO we should speak up! Maybe they will come up with some better tolerated treatment options. Good luck and keep us posted...

Thanks ladies. I was just venting. I caved and took it. I don't want to be stupid about it, but I am sick of it. I have gained 10lbs overall. May not seem like much but it is to me. I did call my dr and she said she's not worried about it. Well phooey I am. She said she expected me to gain 5 lbs from tamoxifen and 5 lbs from being thrown into menopause. It just doesn't seem like it's going to stop. It keeps creeping on and that's what I am worried about. I am 5' 9" and weigh 145 now. Before tamoxifen I was 135. I know 145 lb isn't bad, but I feel fat. This is the heaviest I have ever been. I have to watch everything I eat now. I walk in the morning (and even run the outfield at the baseball field) for an hour and then another 40 minutes in the evening. Not doing me any good clearly.
Thanks for listening ladies. BC is the gift that keeps giving Grrrrr
Nancy
ElaineTherese - my MO wants me to stay on tamoxifen for 5 years (to build up bones) and then switch to an AI for another 5 years. I'm just afraid at the end of 10 years I'm going to weigh 400lbs.
-
Nancy,
I'm jealous! You're 5'9"? And 145? Wow! I wish I were that tall. I'm 5'2". My daughter wishes that I had more height to add to the gene pool. She loves basketball but is only 5'6".
Vent away, girlfriend!

I micro dosed myself without telling anyone until the side effects became too much (my platelet count dropped to 39,000 from Tamoxifen.) The oncologist said to stop when I was in the ER with a count of 52,000 and bruises everywhere.
I started fareston and now I cry every day. I feel pain creeping back in too. Thinking of quitting that too. I lost a lot of hair when I quit Tamoxifen, I wonder if I will have any hair lefty after Fareston.

Quality of life is important. You can try taking Tamoxifen every other day. The one size fits all pill for Tamoxifen does not seem right. Women are all shapes and sizes.
I am Stage IV cancer, I took Tamoxifen as a treatment, not a preventive. I have been on many treatments, as you can see in my signature. My first treatment was Aromasin, and my tumors diminished considerably. The side effects were terrible. It hurt to pee. It hurt to get out of bed. I had to stop the Aromasin. Bummer. I couldn't take the drug that was keeping me alive. ; ( Thank goodness, my doctor was understanding, and we are trying other drugs.
It's not worth it to feel bad, after going through breast cancer once. Every one is different, but from my perspective, ladies, I didn't and wouldn't take something that made me feel miserable. If the breast cancer comes back, guess what? It's not the end of the world, and they will treat you with something else. I didn't take Tamoxifen after my Stage I diagnosis. My reasoning was, I would take it when I actually GOT cancer. And I did, and I was on it for a couple of years, and it worked great. Save the Tamoxifen for when you need it. If you take it as a preventive, you won't be able to take it as a treatment. That's my logic.
You can talk to your doctor, who will try to convince you to stay on it, and make you feel guilty, which you don't need. No one should be made to feel bad for not taking a drug that makes them gain weight and feel bad.

Tarheel, someone shared this link in another thread I started about can I just say no to hormone therapies. Many women get to the point where they cannot abide the SEs and SEs are under reported for hormone therapies:
http://www.northwestern.edu/newscenter/stories/201...
This might be the largest study about why women quit and/or don't tell their drs. the extent of their SEs. Even Tamoxifen micro dosing is not an option for me it made my platelets drop too low (I have ITP should put it in my signature LOL). Now Fareston is making me cry like a banshee (well beyond the I have cancer crying, out of control bawling). Nurse said to stop immediately. Did not take it last night and the pain and crying is subsiding.
I do feel guilty though for being such an "annoying" patient who can't just "tough it out." -
Wow, ozbell, thanks for sharing that. It sounds like both the treatments and the judgments have hurt you. Lot of misunderstandings in and outside of the breast cancer communityabout these very powerful drugs.
-
ozbell....interesting study. I was told by my MO at a major NYC university hospital that if you add those who quit Tamoxifen it's 50 percent! IMO thats way too many and not a sufficient treatment. I'm happy for those who do well on anti hormone therapy but what about the other 50 percent? Add those who are suffering with SE ? We need to speak up so that their could possibly be better treatment options in the future.
-
Yes we need to tell our docs about these SEs it isn't complaining it is reporting and that info needs to be collected by the FDA. I am not one to think of MDs as gods (just very smart people) so I speak up. Otherwise they tend to push people into the roads most taken and one size does not fit all.
The Onc and his nurse though were very quick to tell me to stop when I told them about the Tamoxifen (platelet drop, pain) and Fareston (uncontrollable crying, pain) so the judgement is more from family and self imposed guilt.
-
Seriously considering quitting Tamoxifen. The SE's weren't bad the first 6 months or so (been taking it for 14 months). In fact I was happy to stop having a period because of where I work and how heavy they had become! But now, the hot flashes just make me mad and the vaginal dryness is unbearable. I've tried a few things to combat that problem with a little success but sex just hurts now. And days after as well. Certainly can't be intimate as often as I would like. Feeling a little depressed about it and just not sure what to do. I kind of wish I had taken my chances with surgery and radiation only. Seriously, I have always been healthy and feel much less healthy being on meds than I ever did before. I am using several vitamins and minerals. Started taking most of them when I started Tamoxifen so I probably have warded off some side effects with those. Just thinking out loud ladies!
-
i just returned from my breast surgeon (check up- one year after bmx) and he said my chances of getting breast cancer are less than 1%. better than people who never had it. so why do i still have to take tamoxifen? is it really worth all of the side effects?
