edited September 2016 in Waiting for Test Results

Hello, I'm new to the forum and currently going through the long wait to confirm my breast cancer. I found a lump one week ago and have since had an ultra sound and mammogram. I am bi rad 5 and most likely dealing with cancer. The size is under 2cm so hoping that the stage is early. I will be getting a biopsy and other testing at some point next week. I am most paranoid about my lymph nodes and whether or not the cancer has spread. I have had an ache under my arm and am fearing the worst even though the ultra sound showed my lymph nodes of normal size. Every ache and pain in my body sets me off. Just looking for support and any similar experiences anyone can share. I'm 42, married and have a 7 year old son. Lots of support around me but hoping to connect with others going through similar experience.

Hey Stacey, I was diagnosed 2 weeks ago, now waiting on consult with the surgeon, which will be Monday the 19th. I think this should be called the wait, wait, and wait some more cancer. I am married to such a sweet man, who is 84. I am so scared what this is going to do to him. When I first find out, I thought, we'll it's just the 2 of us, but I have been humbled by the support. There is a good bible study book called fight back with joy, by Margaret Feinberg, who is a breast cancer survivor. Hugs to you as we both go through this waiting journey.

Stacey, as you get more information as to exactly what kind of breast cancer you have (there are over 20+) and what kind of treatment plan you have, I encourage you to start look at the other forums. There is one called "Just Diagnosis" which is a good starting point.

You will find a variety of different forums that will reflect the information you will be given. The ladies there will help you deal with the overwhelming whirlwind you likely will experience. Lean on them. They are a wealth of support and information.

    Hi StacyStrong!

So sorry that you're having to deal with this, but there is still a chance that it will prove to be benign (hope, hope, hope...).

The BiRADs 5 means that the person who assigned the score thinks that what they have seen and heard is "highly suggestive of malignancy." Radiologists can use the BiRADs scores they assign to assess how well they are assessing the imaging studies they see. Approximately 95% of the BiRADs 5 category studies they've assessed should result in a positive biopsy if they're doing their job well. (They can use the statistical results of biopsies on their various BiRAD 4 and 5 categories to assess how their category assignments compare to those of other radiologists. However even for radiologists who are doing a good job, there should still be some biopsies of category 5 imaging studies that have a benign result upon biopsy (at least 5%).

I understand "preparing for the worst," but please don't feel you have to claim a cancer until you have a pathology report that says it is cancer. Here's hoping this is just a bump in the road. But we're here if you need us!

Stacy, Lisa is right. There are some conditions that mimic cancer on imagining. Things like a radial scar or fat necrosis. They look very much like cancer but are B9 conditions.

Lets hope that you fall into that 5% and your biopsy results come back with something like that :). I have certainly see that happen on occasion so it's not out of the realm of possiblity...

    Hi Stacey,

My surgeon told me that if the ultrasound does not show anything in the lymph nodes, there is an 85% chance that the disease has not spread to the nodes. I hope this statistic is of some comfort to you. Waiting for a diagnosis was the most difficult part of my journey so far. Ativan really helped me cope. Best wishes and I hope that you have good news..

Thanks you guys! Yes I was aware of the 5% from the bi rad 5 and still have hope that I will be with the5% :). I have only told people that are close to me since and have given the heads up to my workplace letting them know that there is still a slight chance. Ativan is helping me sleep which is great. Now I need to get through the weekend is if all is a-ok! Thanks so much for your responses! Hope you have great weekends.

    Hi StaceyStrong,

I can understand how you feel as I got my biopsy result for a Bi Rad 4B microcalcification yesterday - it's benign - but the wait for the results felt long, too long.

The wait is always the hardest so don't be too tough on yourself. Do small little activities that will help take your mind off diagnosis even if it's just for a little while.Do whatever you feel like doing and don't feel like you need to keep a strong facade....your family and friends will understand.

Best wishes abd praying for good news for you
