Paclitaxel and anaphylactic shock!!!!!!!!
Hi all,
I just had my 3rd dose of Taxol and had two bad reacitons to it. Felt all hot and sweaty got beet red and felt like my throat was going to close, Taxol was stopped and discontinued yesterday after half hour into treatment so they had me come back today and within 15 minutes started happening again, hot sweaty and throat was tight. So now my thinking is i was on 6 of 8 of taxol and I dont want to continue. My oncologist said there is a "kissing cousin'(his exact wording)of a drug they can use to finish up my two remaining, but I honestly dont want to do the last two. My number 5 taxol I had severe hip and knee and finger tip numbing and pain. Now the 6th had two different days of reactions.
Anyone else had bad reactions to taxol, how far into treatment were you and what did you do to continue or did you not continue treatment?
Thanks

I had a bad reaction to Taxotere. They waited 15 minutes, gave me more benedryl drip and steroids, and started again. No problem, and no subsequent problems.

Hi dawnmarieg, I am confused: did the bad reaction happen on the 3rd dose of taxol or on the 6th? How many were you prescribed to begin with?

Dawnmarie, please ask your onc for more details; you may be reassured. Taxol is mixed in a solvent, and as I understand it, the solvent is what usually causes the allergic reactions. Abraxane has the same cancer-killing taxane drug, but it does not have the solvent. I suspect Abraxane is the cousin your onc is thinking of. It is more expensive, so they usually try taxol first. Communicate about any neuropathy, too, as that is part of the decision-making. The fingertip numbing and pain could be neuropathy, but that gets better as long as you don't go too far. Does your doctor think you can finish your course of treatment (using Abraxane) without lasting neuropathy and without dangerous reactions? If he thinks you can, then I'd say go for it.

I was prescribed 4 AC which were fine except the nausea and tiredness. I then was to do 4 Taxol. I had taxol once and just had numbness and joint pain. The next taxol was the bad reaction 30 minutes into the taxol. The taxol was stopped and I was told to come back the next day and the would try again. I did and within 15 minutes another bad reaction. Everything was stopped and now I go back Tuesday to talk to Onc.
Thanks
