Unrealistic expectations for exchange surgery
After reading many of the posts regarding exchange surgery, I was expecting it to be "easy". While it was easier than mx surgery, it was not easy. Having it in my brain that this would be 'easy', made it disappointing when it was not easy. That was my mistake. I knew the MX would be difficult, so I feel I was better mentally prepared for the discomfort that was to come. I wish I had prepared myself better for the exchange surgery.
I've had two lumpectomies and one BMX, all were outpatient. In all 3 surgeries, only Tylenol was needed after day one, and no nausea from the anesthetic. Unfortunately, I was nauseated after the exchange surgery. Flexiril was needed all through the TE fill process. Those were painful. After the MX, I did feel like an elephant was sitting on my chest for weeks, that finally went away before the exchange surgery.
At the exchange surgery, extensive pocket work was done on both sides. I'm assuming that is the reason for the discomfort, at day 3, I'm still taking the pain pills and valium as needed. It's wonderful to not have the rocks sitting on my chest, I'm just surprised that using my arms and chest muscles is almost, but not quite as bad, as the MX surgery....I was not expecting that. It felt like I was back at square one, which terrified me for a few minutes, until I could get a grip on my emotions.
I'm grateful to have had the exchange surgery, but I would like to encourage everyone to keep an open mind on how you're going to feel after the exchange surgery. It is better, but its still surgery. I keep reminding myself to be patient and let it all heal. This process brings on many emotions, expected and surprising at the same time.
Best wishes to all of you.

It was easier for me than the mastectomy ( that surgery was brutal ). But I still had to take narcotic pain meds and anti nausea medication for about 6 days after my exchange surgery. Besides the pain, you never know how all those drugs will effect you. You are so right, the process does bring different types of emotions.

Vivor, I'm so sorry your exchange was more difficult than expected. I hope you heal quickly and get to feeling better sooner than you expect. My exchange was August 26th. I came off all pain meds in 5 days and have full ROM already. But my drains are being stuborn and are still in place. My original surgery was prophylactic with no node removal. So I'm guessing that has contributed to an easier recovery for me. Each case is unique and each patient experiences different outcomes. I hope the ladies in here can bring you comfort as you recover. Everyone here is or has experienced some of what you are going through. I wish you a speedy recovery and successful reconstruction. You have my empathy and healing wishes!
