Thyroid Problems/Medication

Hello,

My diagnosis & treatment for breast cancer were in 2013. Since my breast cancer was hormone positive, I am taking Examestane - a hormone blocker for 10 years. A year after my diagnosis, I had the left lobe of my thyroid removed (something I had already scheduled prior to my diagnosis). They left the right lobe in because the surgeon said it was fine. The right lobe is the side that got full blown radiation when I had my right breast radiated - that is the side where the tumors were.

I just now had my TSH measured and it was way out of range high. I have not met with my dr. yet but was wondering with my medical history if I am allowed to take something like Synthroid or other type of thyroid hormone since I am taking a hormone blocker.

What are my treatment outlooks?

I, like you, am taking an aromatase inhibitor (anastrazole for me). I am also taking Synthroid, for hypothyroidism. Neither my oncologist nor my endocrinologist expressed any concern about that, and I am not aware of any interaction. Correcting your thyroid hormone levels should not increase your estrogen (and estrogen is the hormone that your cancer therapy is aimed at lowering).

I take tamoxifen and Armour thyroid. I've taken the thyroid medicine for years prior to BC diagnosis. When I started on tamoxifen my endocrinologist wanted to see me every 3 months (instead of every 6) for awhile to make sure the tamoxifen wasn't interfering with my thyroid meds. I was also advised to take my thyroid medicine at a different time of day than I take the tamoxifen. So far, so good. Not sure if this applies to aromatase inhibitors as well.
