Mouth Sores

The day I started rads I had a slight sore throat and saw GP for evaluation. WBC was elevated and antibiotics were prescribed. I started my treatment now I have horrible sores in my mouth and throat. I have been back to the GP and prescribed steroid and mouth wash. Have barely eaten in a week. Has anyone dealt with the possible side effect of mouth sores from rads and how quickly did it start?

Keryfree, I am really sorry you are experiencing mouth sores. I have had them on and off since childhood and know how much they can interfere with daily life.

I was lucky and did not get them from radiation. I get them from eating anything acidic - citrus fruit, tomatoes, etc. I also get them from almost every kind of toothpaste, which seems really weird. I finally found one kind that does not bother me. Sometimes they appear and I don't know why. When I was a child I would get them from stress - my whole mouth would be affected.

What I have may be something completely different from what you are experiencing, and what has helped me may not work for you. But here are some things that I do when I get them. I rinse my mouth with salt water (I know - counter-intuitive) or a dilution of hydrogen peroxide. I use a topical painkiller that is made for the purpose; no Rx needed. Ask for it at the pharmacy. I eat yogurt and / or take pro-biotics to improve my digestive health. I get a new toothbrush.

Now that I have written this, I wonder why I have not discussed this problem with my dentist. Du-uh.

I hope you find relief soon.

Thanks so much essiert for your reply. I am going to add the salt water to my list of helpful tips. I also see my Onco Doc tomorrow and will discuss with him if he thinks anything else is going on, just to be safe.
