Welcome , Octogirl We will help you get in shape for Hawaii. What fun.
Cheryl loved the story about the teddy bear and Baileys. How precious.
I was able to walk yesterday at lunch for 25 minutes and today at lunch 35 minutes.
-
Right now it is pouring...and thunder too. I'm enjoying the rain, but hope it stops before long so I can get my evening walk in.
Today was totally overwhelmed with work. Too bad I can't afford to retire yet....too much tuition to pay this year for my DD. I like my new position but it is going to kick my you know what!!!
DD went out with a gf for froyo. When she gets home we are going to start putting things in her luggage. I'm going to roll everything and pack it in large ziplock bags. I told her I was going to help as when she does it she often forgets something. NOT mailing anything to Israel. She needs to be packed by Friday. She was disappointed when I said I had a mandatory training Friday afternoon. I told her we had the morning together and out to lunch. Then we have Shabbat dinner and all of Shabbat. DD told me that she hasn't had an anxiety/panic attack yet!!! Me just realizing how much life with be different next year without her home.!!! Not really ready to empty nest, but then again, I"m so happy for her.
Got my walk in!!

Welcome Octogirl!
Cheryl: Your story gave me goosebumps!
Karen: So glad you found the necklace! I feel your pain about your dd leaving. It won't be easy. Thank goodness for cell phones, facebook, etc. You're be able to keep up with all her adventures.
Dh had been out of town for several days. While he was gone I was busy doing chores around the house. I exercised all but one day he was gone. I also walked/ran this evening. Looking forward to lower humidity that's predicted for this weekend!
-
Starting packing with DD tonight.....with just tops and skirts she is already at 36#....she still has winter sweaters, jammies, under garments, shoes, boots and toiletries to pack!! Its NOT all going to pack....I think she is starting to stress. We are packing in extra large zipper bags....40+ tops, plus t-shirts and more!! Tomorrow she is going to have to decide what she can live without. I think I stressed her out!!! Some of her friends have parents going earlier in the fall and will bring things or they have family there and already have stuff. She needs a sleeping bag, but no way is it going to fit. She is taking 2 large duffle bags at 50# each and a carry-on at 23#. I feel for her...she has never learned to pack light and now its for a year!!! Hope to finish it all tomorrow night!! Wish her luck.
-
Karen I know it's late but space bags are better than zip lock bags and you can really get a ton of stuff in them, they have travel ones at the Container Store. Glad you found your missing package. I sure wish it would rain here, we have the heat again bleah....
Ruth don't you hate when your schedule changes, darn those instructors getting 'real' jobs and messing up our schedules.
Claire your trip sounds fabulous.
Octogirl must be something in the water as I slept in till 7am this morning, I'm usually wide awake by 6am so it was a pleasant surprise to get an extra hour.
My happy news for the day is that LilacBlue and her son stopped by my office on their way to LAX today, they are heading back to the UK tonight, it was absolutely wonderful to meet up IRL more like visiting with an old friend rather than meeting face to face for the first time we talked and talked and her son is an absolutely delightful young man, another BCO to IRL connection made She said to say hi to everyone on the thread, here we are - photo courtesy of her son.
Now to the exercise part.... Yesterday did Body Jam and tonight did Grit Strength, Crunch Time and U Jam, mind you my knees were locked up in U Jam so it was pretty low key.
-
Claire - great adventure! Karen - so glad you found the necklace. I had the same thing happen when I traveled one time - I tucked a favorite necklace away "in a safe place" and of course couldn't find it. It was some months later when I found it in a bag I'd used on the trip - what a happy day that was! Sometimes we outfox ourselves, I think. Ruth - so sorry about your Barre teacher - it always seems to go that way, doesn't it? Cheryl and Lilac - so great you got to meet!
Sounds like a lot of us are ready to retire!!!!
Yucky news for me this week - after being off Femara for 3 wonderful years, I'm going back on. As some of you may remember, I did my 5 years on Femara and had every s/e in the book. My 5 years were up 3 years ago, and I didn't stay on it as there was no research at that point to indicate benefit for someone with my dx. Well there have been new studies released since then, and most importantly, the BCI genomic test is now available for node-positives like me. At my last annual appointment a few weeks ago, my MO suggested that we get the BCI done on my tumor to see if I'd benefit from going back on AIs. Got this results this week, and yep, I'm at high risk for recurrence. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest risk, I'm an 8.8. Not good. Based on recent studies and the BCI test results, my MO is recommending that I go back on AIs. I've spent the last few days frantically researching everything I could about this, and reluctantly I've come to the conclusion that I concur with my MO's recommendation. So back on the AI regime for me. I'm promising myself that I'll start with a 3 month trial and see how it goes from there - I really am not looking forward to all the s/e I had before. Maybe since I've had 3 years off and have recovered from my treatment, the s/e won't be as bad. Sigh. Just when I was beginning to hope it might all be in the rear view mirror.
Nasty heat drove me inside again yesterday for a dreadmill run. Next week is supposed to be cooler in the early a.m, so hopefully I can resume my outdoor runs.
-
NatsFan, sorry about having to go back on Femara....I will say though that after taking a very short break from it I decided to go back on it, based on some of the new studies. It is effective...
Walked 1.5 miles this am around the neighborhood, yay! Off to work...

Lovely picture of the lovely Cheryl & Lilac. Whenever you get a chance to meet up with other BCO members, be sure that you do. It is such an awesome "coming home" experience.
Blah, Nats. That is discouraging news.
We did our fun Wednesday Women's walk this morning. Tonight will be Zumba & Yoga. Tomorrow we take off for a long weekend in the Twin Cities. It's my SIL's 60th birthday, my NC Carolina sister is flying in, we are having a reunion with my mom's side of the family and going to the Twins game. Mary, they have lost 12 straight games, so you can see why I don't have to plan my vacations around their post-season schedule .
-
Cheryl...I used extra large (2.5gal) zipper bags this summer and they did the job. With as much stuff as DD is taking, it will cost me a fortune with space bags. She seems to be able to get most of what she wants to take, but might have to take a little out. There a couple things that she will just have to buy there like a mattress pad and buy or borrow a sleeping bag. Good thing I took sheets and towels for her this summer.
Nat....never heard of the BCI test. Everytime I see my oncologist he asks me about going back on AI's. My answer is always a resounding NO. I endured 3 1/2 years on them with side effect after side effect, including 3 wrist surgeries. I know I'm at risk for re-occurance, but quality of life is more important for me right now. It would take a lot to convince me to go back on them. I always ask my onc if there is anything new out there. I see him in mid September. I will have to check out what the BCI test is and whether to ask him about him. Might not as I don't want to go back on AI's.
Treating DD to steak tonight as that was a request for her to have meat!! once when she was home. She did not have meat the two months at camp and probably wont have meat, or at least steak all year!!!
Hoping to get most of the packing finished tonight!!
-
Cheryl and LilacBlue: Love Love Love the picture! So happy you were able to meet. You both are beautiful! I know you had a wonderful visit.
Nats: I will have to ask my MO about the BCI test. Did you try switching from Femara to Arimidex to help with the se?
Ruth: Nice picture! Have fun at your reunion and tell your SIL Happy Birthday for me!
No formal exercise today.
-
I just read the info on the BCI test.....its for ER+ and HER2- and no node involvement.....I at 10 years out but stopped the AI's 6+ years ago...but I'm am node positive so this test wouldn't apply to me even if I was still on AI's.....Good to know as its one less decision I have to deal with!!!
-
Cheryl such a treat for you and Lilacblue to get together in person! You both look great
Add me to the "looking forward to retiring list".
Mary sorry you have to go back to a drug you didnt feel well on. Maybe it will treat you kinder. If not, its always your choice.
I had to mow my lush green lawn today in between rainy days It was quite a gorgeous day today, 75, sunny and low humidity. Mowing 35 minutes and then a 34 minute dog and pokemoning walk!
-
Oh what a great pic Cheryl & LB!!
Ruth I'm getting to recognize some of your WWW group. Have fun in MN. I ♥ Minneapolis.
Mary, sorry about AI redux. Hope it's better this time around. RE: BB, I don't make plans based on the Brewers. :-(
Pretty day today, nice enough for a noon walk outside. Helped a friend pick veggies after work. Her hip is bothering her and it hurts to bend so she can't harvest her beautiful garden. In addition to the fellowship, I received a nice box of produce for my efforts.
Octogirl, I can't remember if I said welcome yet... so welcome! :-)
-
Love the pic, Cheryl! What a great reward for fellowship and exercise, badger. Gardening counts as exercise, yes.
Karen, congrats on being 10 years out!! Might still be worth talking to your onc. Tamoxifen is another option and you can always say no. I am on a low dose and have much fewer side effects than with AIs. Mary, this could be something for you too in addition to switching AIs. I have been switching anti-hormonals for 4 years now, although not brands. I like tamoxifen best so will probably stick with this. The first 5 years I took short drug holidays and SEs eased up each time I went back. I think that SEs are generally worse the closer you are to menopause, to chemo, the higher the stage, the more deficient you are in Vitamin D. This is from my reading sometime back so I can`t give you sources. But maybe it won`t feel like you got hit by a truck this time.
-
Thanks for all the support about the AIs - popped the first one today.DH picked up the scrip yesterday for me, and when he handed it to me he also handed me some flowers he'd bought. He knows how upset I've been about this whole thing. I thought that was sweet.
Karen - apparently the BCI is now used for 1-3 positive nodes. I was surprised when my MO suggested it as I too had thought it was limited to node negative. ASCO still doesn't recommend it for routine use for node-positive as there still isn't much info on node positives. If my score had been in the lower end of positive, I'd probably have disregarded it given all the the uncertainties. But but where's there's smoke there's fire, and given that it as as high as it was, that was a lot of smoke. I have an appointment in two weeks to go over all of this with my MO. The odd thing is that my insurance hasn't been billed yet for it, so I'm wondering if my MO is participating in some kind of study. Heidi - your words are reassuring and make sense. When I started it last time, I had just finished chemo, which threw me into chemopause, and my Vit D level was something like 17. Now I'm 8 years past chemo and menopause, and my Vit D consistently tests out at around 60. I also did some holidays the first time around which helped a lot. There's been a lot of discussion on the hormonal therapy thread about switching AIs, or even switching generics of the same drug, if s/e get too bad - all good options if needed.
I sense a giant retirement party coming up in a few years for a lot of us!!!!!!!
-
Mary that's so sweet!
It'll be five years before I can retire. My DH is self-employed and his income fluctuates. I have a steady paycheck plus health ins and pension. But it cheers me up to think about it and start to plan.
Another picture-perfect day for an afternoon walk.
-
Took a long walk down to a bar by the Sr. Croix River in beautiful Stillwater, MN, had a drink, and back up the steep hills to my brother's house. Lovely day here too.
-
Looks like a beautiful place, and a beautiful day for a walk, Ruth!
Today was another just walk around the campus day. But it is supposed to cool down to good walking weather this weekend. Can't wait!

Mary hopefully the AI will be gentler on your system this time around, I found that the fillers/dyes made a difference as on one brand my joints were achy but on another I was just fine. Ruth have a wonderful time in Minnesota with your family. Badger I am so glad that you are taking care of you, no one ever appreciates all that extra work you put in they just come to expect it, Enjoy the next few days with your DD Karen, it will be sad but the year will fly by - look a month ago it was January and boom now it's September
Double header tonight, Body Combat followed by Body Pump and I upped my weight on the bar for chest and back I will feel that tomorrow for sure.
-
OK Badger - we'll pencil you in for a retirement party in 5 years! Ruth - what a pretty view. What day is your Twins game? Cheryl - I've heard from so many people that the fillers in the AIs can make a big difference, so I will not be shy about experimenting if things get rough. And your version of a "double header" is a lot more strenuous than my version, which is sitting through two baseball games, beer and hot dog in hand!
Nice cool morning for my dawn run, but sheesh the days are getting shorter. I'm having to keep my running light on for a few minutes longer each time now .
Everyone in Hermine's line - stay safe and dry!
-
Twins game is tonight. I got up and did some toning; will get in plenty of walking in today as we are going to visit some of the lovely area parks this afternoon.
-
Finally getting to post pix from my latest adventure. Still glowing from the scenery and fun. Heading out tomorrow for cycling and vineyard camping. - Claire
Up close view of the glaciers on Mount Rainier. I had never been to Paradise in summer, so was fun to see this.
Tatoosh Range facing Rainier. Note that the walking paths are paved, so not really a hike.
Looking south from Paradise.
Deluxe accommodations in Packwood, the start of the ride.
Cowlitz Valley before the climb....the real riders made it to the top of Mount St Helens.
Looking up from the upland valley we cycled....
More cycling views...note that almost no traffic on the back roads.
This is Yellow Jacket River. Note that the water still looks like "spring runoff" from Mount St Helens.
Everything you could want at a rest stop...mechanic, snacks, water, porta-potties (clean, I might add), good looking guys in Spandex. They had made it to the top. The lone bicycle is mine.
What I think a lot of ride food really is made of.....
-
Note to self. . .check this board daily because I can't keep up with all the great posts otherwise. Had my 4-month MO check today and was told I'm getting lymphodema on both sides. So referral to a special clinic for massage and just another reason to really push through with my exercise even if it's only the dreadmill and hiking, hopin I can still do light weights anD my regulag stretching. Had some fun photographing preseason football at our dome last night.

Claire: Gorgeous pictures! I can smell the clean air just looking at them.
Scottiemom: Oh my. So sorry about your LE. Wishing you the best with your tx. Great pictures of the Falcons!
Nats: Your dh is so sweet and understanding. Give him a big hug for me.
Hermine is now a tropical storm and where I live in NC is barely affected by it. Thinking of all those in its path. Today has been cool, cloudy, and breezy. Dh and I took advantage of it and mowed. I mowed for 90 minutes. Now I'm watching my chestnut tree dance in the wind through a golden sky.
-
Starting to freak out about the east coast weather. JetBlue has a travel alert as is waiving change fees for flights this weekend to many east coast airports including JFK. DD has a red eye flight tomorrow night...If her flight gets cancelled, I'm not sure what we will do....Her group flight leaves Sunday evening from JFK......Once candle lighting happens tonight, I won't be online till tomorrow evening an hour or so before we have to leave for the airport.
On a more positive note, she got both her bags to just under 23kg.
Want to take some pictures of her and me tonight....then will take a couple at the airport tomorrow night.
Keep your fingers and toes crossed that her flight tomorrow night goes as scheduled!!!
-
Fingers and toes crossed Karen! And stay safe and dry, those on the east coast!
Here in central California we are expecting a nice weekend with sunny weather. Looking forward to the break...

GREAT pix, Claire! Fingers & toes crossed, Karen!
Scottie, please check out this BCO thread: Guidelines on Exercise For Those With/At Risk for Lymphedema
I also bumped it up to the top of Active Topics for you. https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/58/topics...
Hardly anyone was at work so a light-duty day. Another beautiful day with a walk at lunch break. TGIF!

Haha so true Badger. Claire absolutely gorgeous pictures such breathtaking scenery. Karen hope all goes well and no flight cancellations. Wonderland glad you are safe from Hermine. Scottie sorry to hear about the LE such great information about it here so you have great resources at your fingertips.
This morning got up and went to the gym and did Sprint, it's a 30 minute HIIT class on a bike then tonight was supposed to go to San Diego for Body Jam but the holiday traffic was horrendous so went to Grit Strength and Zumba locally, the evening instructors Mom has been diagnosed with BC and had her first chemo last week so I took a small gift for him to give her, in return he gave me his Fitbit Blaze I tried to say no but he insisted, he is a techie and insisted that he has something new, couldn't believe his generosity. -
Aw, Cheryl that was so sweet of him, and sweet of you, too! Wonder what new technology he got?
Badger, that is cute and so very true.
Great photos, Scottie and Claire. Scottie so sorry you are getting lymphadema with only 4 nodes removed. UGH.
Gorgeous day here yesterday. Today seems to be following in its footsteps. Yesterday I worked half a day. The weather was perfect for a vitamin D layout so I laid on the deck 15 minutes each side and then went to the lake and walked 45 minutes, then DH and I went to the movies. A good start to the weekend.
