5 years out, on Tam, 3 years of OS, almost 48 period is back....

title says it all...all I gotta say is whaaaaaa??????? have these ovaries not sufficiently been fried yet? between chemo, over 3 years on Zoladex and approaching 48 I thought I was done. ive been off the shots for almost 2 years!!!! how do these ovaries start up again?????? I just got a period!!

how long can I be on these shots because I will have to go back on, obviously not in menopause

should I just remove my stubborn ovaries??? I was 95% ER positive to this estrogen is not a good thing

I really thought I was in menopause

    Your situation reminds me of a member, comingtoterms. You might want to search her posts.

    My situation is different but participated in threads about those of us who take for ever to get to menopause.

    your doctor can run blood tests to determine whether you are in menopause or not. My MO has me coming in December for bone scan and blood tests to determine whether I am in menopause or not. If I am, she will switch me from Tamoxifen to Arimidex. I have not had a period since my 3rd chemo in Dec. 2014, I am 50..

    My ob/gyn says that the average age of menopause is 51. So, it's not surprising that you're still getting periods.You must have very robust ovaries!

    thanks you ladies, I know there isn't much advice to offer other than go back on the shots or have these removed...sigh

    yes my ovaries seem to be very stubborn, I really thought I was done with them - 2 years? I mean really. Now of course I'm panicked that I have enough estrogen to have a full blown P - ugh!

    That sucks! I have read about other women who got their periods two years after chemo ended. At least you're on Tamoxifen. That is much better than if you had been on an AI.

    My period came back four months after chemo. I was really hoping they would never come back. That's one of the reasons I ended up doing an ooph last year. I had just turned 43 when the surgery was done. I'm 90% ER+ so I can't imagine there will ever be a time that lots of estrogen would be a good thing. Doing shots for another 7-9 years didn't sound like fun.

    Rozem, the surgery itself was pretty easy. I was at my son's baseball game the next morning. My only side effects now are warm flushes, fatigue and some stiffness when I first get up in the morning or have been sitting a while. BUT, I'm also on Anastrozole and those are also side effects of the drug. Exercise has definitely helped with the stiffness. The hot flashes came back and more frequently for a month or so after surgery and then they went back to warm flushes occasionally. That was a little surprising since I had been getting Zoladex shots. Overall, I'd say I've done pretty good with the ooph and AI. It was a tough decision to make.

    Have you talked to your GYN? He or she may want to check that it is in deed a period and not some uterine problem. I had my last period in April 2015 just after my first chemo treatment. Tamoxifen is causing my endo lining to thicken so my doc said to let him know asap if I had any bleeding. I would think it best to let the GYN check things out just to be on the safe side.

    jpr143 - I did call my gyn on the advice of my MO and I have an apt scheduled. I don't think its anything sinister as I just had a trans vag u/s and a biopsy due to thickening and everything was normal - this was within the last few months. I will see what she says anyway
