Radiation question

Hi. I'm in the middle of testing and waiting on surgery. I have IDC in left breast. I am leaning towards lumpectomy, but my Dr said mastectomy with reconstruction could also be an option. My cancer is directly behind the nipple and areola, so we know that I will lose the whole nipple. I haven't seen a RO yet and I forgot to ask my surgeon a question that I think you all could possibly help with. My daughter is expecting a baby in a few months and wants me in the room when she delivers. My question is, is it OK to be around newborns and/or elderly people while taking radiation? This (along with more testing) will help me to make my surgery choice. Thanks for any input.

Yes, it'll be just fine. The radiation passes right through your body.

With a lumpectomy plus rads, you'll be far less likely to have ouchy spots on that breast when it's baby holding/lifting/cuddling time.
