Vision changes after surgery

I am on day 4 after surgery. My vision in both eyes is worse than before surgery. I am pretty sure that my left eye was scratched either during surgey or in the recovery room because even with the strong IV pain meds that eye was killing me when I woke up.

No more eye pain now but I notice a distinct difference in the clarity of my vision. Distance vision seems mostly clear but near and computer screen distance is pretty bad.

Anyone else with this issue? Will it get better as I continue to recover?

Most places tape eyelids shut so your eyes don't stay open and dry out while you're under; it's possible that your cornea was scratched or that you had a reaction to the adhesive used on the tape.

Probably worth checking with your doctor over just to be safe, as vision changes aren't usually a side effect of a mastectomy.

    Hi Leydi:

I second amw's advice to seek care. From the abstract of a review on vision issues after non-opthalmic surgery:

"Postoperatively any visual changes should be immediately referred to an ophthalmologist and treated accordingly."

For future readers: An astute board member in another thread made the possible link between my use of a scopolamine patch for nausea during/after surgery and my vision issues. I read up on the side effects and they fit my experience. I removed the patch and a couple days later, my vision returned to normal. *whew*

My vision changed after surgery too - I could hardly see anything close and ended up sending my husband to get a package of readers. It's been over 6 weeks and I am 95% back to normal. Still need readers but only a few times a week. Weird!
